Thread: Where do i go?

Hey all,

Having read the guidelines i don't want to break the rules (number 3 specifically) so i think i'm safe with this.....

Can someone point me in the direction of a forum/mail list or what ever that i can find someone who can create a simple program for me?

I have QT, which i am sure is actually a really simple program to use but i cant even figure out how to make the example work. The example phone book in that is perfect (with a few little tweaks) so i know this could be real simple for someone.
As usual, a little bit of info is a dangerous thing, and my little bit of info isnt enough to get me through this.

The program i want is a simple system with 2 "versions"
The first version is for me to use, allowing for data to be enterred into a database.
The second version is for users to use, this only allows for users to search for a specific phrase within a database.

I don't want to pay much (if anything) but i will accept quotes if there is no other way so don't let that affect suggestions

First and foremost i want the program, whether that means i have to learn what i need or i have to just let someone else do it.

I know that's a bit abrupt, but, the whole thing is frustrating me greatly. I have tried to work this project many different ways, bending and altering systems to work for me. But i need to make do all the time, something i dont want to do anymore.

Ideally i would like to at the very least see the source coding so i can rip it apart and learn from it. This would give me a better understanding and starting place should i want to add or update things at a later stage.

So if you are looking for just the solution, it is unlikely anyone is willing to do it for free. At least I think this is the case on this forum: this is more for helping with specific parts of a program, rather than writing entire solutions for people.

Again, if you just need the solution, be it for a job or practical use, the quickest solution is to pay someone for the whole thing. Im sure whoever you find to pay will give you the source code (or just make it part of the contract). Note that (In my opinion) being given an entire programs sourcecode does not make it easy to understand the program, or at least does not make it easy to understand programming. If you want to learn programming by understanding someones source code, then you can do this already for free. Search "sourceforge" or "freshmeat". There might even exist current free and opensource projects on there (or elsewhere) for what you want. If you dont need it for personal use, i.e. for some company, then pay attention to the legal information and license regarding this type of use or modifying the source code.

If you dont have patience to write the program, you may not have the patience to understand a given solution to the problem. Realize I do not mean to discourage. If your end goal is to learn programming, I would start with smaller projects to understand the basic and fundamental concepts, versus attacking a large project without this background.

I dont want to pay but i'm not refusing to, more looking to see if it is possible first. I was hoping for maybe a student (or someone along those lines) to take up the project.
This isnt some large program that's going to take days and days but the application itself may be of interest to some as a bit of variety (I cant see many having reptile related database projects as part of the portfolio)

Well if you think its hard to find, then its because your asking for something thats unlikely possible: something for nothing. You can get help for free very easily on these (or any similar forum) for specific questions, not for entire solutions for free.

Im a student but, as most students, am very busy and wouldnt be willing to do an entire project for free (much different than offering free help on these forums for specific questions). I imagine any decent knowledgeable student is in a similar situation. If you find one that has that much free time to offer, it might mean they dont know what they are doing, in which youre wasting money for poor quality software.

If its something that may be of use/interest to others, did you listen to my suggestion above to search for it? I just checked sourceforge and they have 230,000 projects. On freshmeat I couldnt find the statistic, but an empty search string returned at least 40,858 results. All of these projects are usually free and open source.

All of these points were mentioned/hinted at in my previous posts.
