A simple database is a good use for linked lists, with slight modifications you can create queues that will handle transactions of any type you care to think of, stacks that allow you to allocate memory in your programs which are used liberally by compiler writers and OS programmers.
I sometimes use linked lists as a better array where I can sort, insert and delete without worrying about moving around huge amounts of data. The possibilities are endless.
