disassembling and reading C code from executable

hi, I'm learning to write code on my own and books i can find on internet...
Wrote a few programs, already quite complicated (best way to learn is to do it...)

But it becomes time that i put these stupid books aside and that i learn from the profs...

I thought linux was free and that we could look in all the code, but all the main programs are converted to binary executables... that i can't open in emacs....

i've tried several programs but none of there output is readable for me...

please help me out of my misery and give me the key to heaven of code writing... :-D

    thanks...

You can download the source code for the most linux programs... including the kernel
All problems in computer science can be solved by another level of indirection,
except for the problem of too many layers of indirection.

thanks, I even forgot after my new install of eeebuntu to include the source codes in my repositories...

Actually ridiculous question... or maybe not? I'm already 36 hours awake...
Some sleep will do me good...

    Thanks anyway....
