    linux audio detection

Hello, I am wondering if there is a simple way to detect if audio is being sent to the soundcard/ onboard audio and also check if the microphone is being used. Thanks for any help!

Using ALSA? (I don't know the answer, just asking this for people that do)

One of the nice things about Linux is that most of the freely available software also makes available its source code. So all you have to do is find an application that already does what you want to know how to do and look at its source code.

Thanks for your suggestion, I've just found xmms, and I think I'll be able to find what I'm looking for there. Also I've come across this which I think will be useful.
