Whats this contest thing about? I'm interested so lemme have it!
I got an idea: how about a compact XML parser thats able to handle DTDs (xml schemas)?
Problem is: not everyone knows XML. I made the assumption that *all* programmers know HTML, and ran a contest which contestants were to parse HTML files and display results. Many couldn't take part because they didn't know HTML.Originally posted by Speedy5

Many less programmers know regular expressions and that Mid function. But then again less people know XML than HTML. Its not really hard to learn and its a popular standard for data. So, it might be useful to raise public awareness of the technology. Maybe someday we'll have it.
... What? Creating a function to match regular expressions or return a substring is entirely different than learning HTML or XML. It's called problem solving; I would hope most programmers wouldn't instantly know the solution to a given contest problem.Originally posted by Speedy5

I was interested in signing up for the text compression contest, but i don't see anything on it. Is it still going on? Over? cancelled?
There is a lot of controvesy surrounding this contests board. The

I think you need to lighten up a bit. We like to have a little fun around here! Yes, I changed the poll, that's pretty obvious. The poll was running for at least a week or two before I rigged the results (they were largely in my favor to begin with) so I don't really see why that matters.Originally posted by bookworm

As for 'arguing' with members, no, I was joking around.
In response to your other post; It's hard enough organizing a single contest, you have to find a problem, present it, organize contestants and judges and then get the submissions out to judges to have them judged. All the power to you if you think you can run 4/5 simultaneously, each one tailored to different experience levels/interests.
I'm pretty sure i'm done with this. I can't help but think someone could do a much better job. I simply don't have time to run and judge the contests by myself. It'd be alright if the judging wasn't left up to me, but in previous contests I was the lone judge expected to judge all contests entries.
In my opinion, the RegEx contest isn't even worth judging. I got 2 entries on time, and 1 other came in like a week later. I don't feel 3 contestants and 1 judge (me) shows enough interest in the problem to dictate continuing on.
Anyhow, i'll give some thought as to whether I want to continue on with contest master... more to come.
I can guarantee you that will take at most 20 minutes to judge those 3 entries. I spent a lot of time perfecting my regex code and making it work with every case. It'd be a shame if it never got judged.Originally posted by Eibro

Probably true, but could you publish the entries, please?Originally posted by Eibro

You switched the names of my file. Mine's the .h file with Alejandro Barreto name in it. Lucky's is that cpp file.
Where's the judging though?
Eh, dammit. You all had them named the same, so I got mixed up somewhere between downloading and renaming.Originally posted by Speedy5

Anyway, it's now fixed. As for judging, no, i'm not doing it. If someone wants to judge the entires, I welcome them.
