But in general they are not printable. Try duplicating them on your keyboard. (w/ using the ALT+? method)

In ASCII, 127 is the delete character, so the fact that you 'see' anything is entirely random, depending on your particular set of circumstances.
If you want it to remain printable, look up "rot13" say.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.
