I figure, it's just writing an assignment statement... if it makes 'em happy... and sometimes you have to learn by example anyway.

    *shrugs*

Not when that someone demonstrate that that someone knows absolutely nothing about the language, not even the basics, such as this someone

Ooh, I thought you were talking about yourself for a second there Elysia

On the serious side, don't feed the Seagulls -- especially when it's against the rules.

I can't find where the rules say you can't, even if writing a whole program is a bad idea. Besides, how are we supposed to teach then, if we are not allowed to demonstrate?

Translation: Don't bait them to continue the flamewar.
That's typically what the phrase means.

Although it could also mean, don't bait someone to start a flamewar.
Or just don't feed the trolls.

I don't see how what I was doing could be construed to be either of those things.

So what makes them a troll?

I thought that a troll was someone who asks a question for the purposes of getting other people to argue, which clearly was not the case here.

Perhaps the way omarbags replied as I quoted?
Someone who's just baiting you to reply to stupidly easy questions in hope of getting you to do all the work?

How did you learn to use the assignment operator? Surely it was some example in a book or web page. How is what I was doing any different?

The OP showed some work, asked a question. Just because it's an extremely newbie question, you think that it's improper to answer it?

I surely didn't ask anyone to tell me, you're not his tutor -- he has to learn some things himself.

Mentally, even if he doesn't know it -- "oh robwhit told me x, and he's really nice, I'll PM him with my next assignment". Then you've got a troll that won't leave you alone

Ooh, where's MacQyver when you need him -- to burst in about his homework statement.

Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's like you're being asked to don your leotard and dance ever so gracefully all around the subject, while never showing the simple answer in code.

I wouldn't want to show every homework assignment help requestor their answer in code, by any means, but in this case, I believe we can say we haven't given away the royal jewels to the street clearner, just yet.
