scanf, getchar, gets, etc. are ignored.

Okay, so I tried both fgets and sscanf. I cannot use fgets for this purpose because it requires an extra character be added to the string you're reading to account for null termination, and there's no way to do an if statement with a string more than one character long. sscanf does marginally more than scanf: instead of completely ignoring that there is a variable there, it fills it with nothing and I get that last part of my program that says, "Only l or q, please." And as for trying the linear and quadratic parts of the program in their own functions, that's the first thing I tried, no dice there, either. So, that takes out standard, usually functional uses of scanf, sscanf, fgets, gets, getch (because I'm on Linux), and fscanf. Any other ideas?

What did you try? If you never learn how to use and write functions properly, you will not go far in C programming.

strings need to be zero terminated in C anyway, and I think you are forgetting that you can write an if statement for strings, because strings are arrays. Either reference an element in the array or use a cmp function like strcmp.

Nobody said that your program didn't need rewriting. I think you would find the program much simpler to write if main looked like this, instead of doing everything in one function.

That's hardly bullet-proof, but it is possible to use fgets and sscanf in your work. You just need to expend a bit more brain power and figure out how to rewrite your code with these functions.

I know how to write separate functions, that really isn't the problem, I'm saying that the first time I tried to write this combined program, I tried it with linear and quadratic in separate functions from main, but that's how I figured out that scanf wouldn't work for separate functions. At that point, I'd already written in a loop, so when I combined it into one function, it didn't work in the loop either, so I took it out, and it still didn't work just with the if statements (the program crashed right after the offending operations each time, demonstrating that none of them work). Thank you for telling me about tolower, looks like a useful function.
