gee, thanks for all the responses... ok, i did see the coded sucked in error checking, and "void main" wasn't that nice either, but i just wanted it to get compiled to see if it is the right functions called to use the sockets.. i've rewritten such a program again with error checking, and the same functions, but it also complained about the winsock.h header file functions...

as for the declarations after first code execution, this i didn't know, i've done that before myself too... but i will keep it in mind for future reference...
