    Callback functions

Can anyone explain to me callback functions in gtk. I know this isn't a gtk forum but I can't find them anywhere, and gtk is part of c so I figured I'd ask here. The only thing I know about them is that they intercept signals for a button or GtkWidget. Please help me sorry about the vagueness of the question I just don't know much and I only know of one tutorial and can't find any books
