I need an example of some socket code

Hey I'm trying to learn this socket stuff but it just won't sink in.

I was wondering if anyone knew of where I could find an example of a socket code that does something simple like allowing someone to telnet to your computer on a certain port and then displays a message. Preferably this will be a snippet designed for a *nix system but I do have a windows compiler (The free one from Borland).
