Best C Book

i bet you all get this a lot, but what is the best book for a beginner to buy? i don't just want to know simple stuff though, i would like to be fairly advanced by the time i finish the book. are the "C for dummies" books any good? i can get the first and second edition for $40. any suggestions?

If you can get both books for $40 that sounds like a deal. Most of the good books aren't much better than any other good C book, just different. The only book that can really be considered the BEST is the K&R series, written by C's inventors. Be sure to get either ANSII or the newer version, not the first.

A lot of people say that the C Programming language book by K&R is a great book, a little bit difficult for new people to the language, but still, a great reference, you can download this book in kazaa or another place.

This is a great book for beginners and I still use it to this day as a reference. I have the second edition, however I've had this book for probably four years so I'm sure there must be a newer edition by now.

C How to program, by Deitel and Deitel, is a good book, I like the it's style in presenting information.

ive just received my "Pointers on C" book byKenneth A. Reek
and IMO its not for totally newbies its more for "advanced" ppl.
but u can still have a look at it fo reference

Is that book only about pointers in C?!
If so, I never thought that there will be a book about pointers in C, only.

I have found that the Sams 'Teach yourself C for Linux Programming,' while not maybe a stand alone book, is a good addition to say K&R's book. What I mean by this is that, for me, it has been a very good compliment to K&R.

From my own personal experience, I've found just being in possession of K&R's The C Programming Language improves your ability to code*. It has a mystical influence on your spirit, as it subconsiously teaches you C.

And it's a good reference to boot.

The only beef I have with it is that £30 (Well, it was when I bought it 3 years ago) for a book printed using UNIX tools and a cheap printer is a bit much. How much was it when it first came out?

That's more reasonable... And yes pointers are a very important part of C and C++, although many people think they are not easily learned, but to be a pro. in C or C++ one should master pointers... especially for implementing data structures, and for windows programming.
