What does "some background" mean?
A 1-semester course in visual basic, 10 years ago probably doesn't count.
5 years of current experience in Java might be more useful.
We have a book thread, though you'd probably want to only pay attention to people with a reasonably high post count. A drive-by 1-poster recommending a book not mentioned by anyone else probably isn't worth the effort.
C Book Recommendations
You could also check the reviews on Amazon. But again, most of those will be from people who are novices, so perhaps not the best people for giving a proper technical critique of a book (other than it was a good read).
