sorting question

No, I don't need the code. I need you to explain what "the matrix number" is, and then we'll go from there.

I see you've also changed the sorting algorithm. I don't know that one (obviously it's a bubblesort of some type), but
I don't know if you have it right or not. Why don't you use the algorithm I gave you, and get it working, then put your
revised bubblesort algorithm in there, and you can see if it works right, etc.

That's a sure sign that you have an error in your code. Making another error won't fix it. Your arrays work MUST start with 0 and end with one number less than the number of objects as we normally count them. You don't always have to use element 0 in the array, but you have to know it's there, and code around it, if that is your choice.

Rarely for a special program, I'll do that. No gain to do it here.

Actually, it makes it easy once you get used to it.

I see the problem, you didn't compare them *through the Index*:

if( strcmp(records[Index[i]].student, records[Index[j]].student) > 0) {
//etc.

The number was a part of the struct, so when the struct got sorted, the number got sorted with it. If you don't need or want that number, don't print it.

Perhaps, as Vart suggested above, you want to just print i. (You should be printing i + 1, but that's another matter). :p

Yes, and he says he gets spurious char's when he has it start at 0, but he doesn't know what's causing it.

It's my little jab in the ribs to find that bug and fix it. These programs should be 100% bug free so they can serve as templates for writing similar programs.

The C standard allows access to one element past the end of the top of the array. It does not allow any access below 0, however.

Having any data one element past the top of an array, is very risky. There is no guarantee that that data will remain in tact. Only access to that element is guaranteed without crashing your program - not putting or accessing data there.

I would say then, that you were lucky. You should really memorize this common idiom of C:

Ar you claiming that an array of ten elements guarantees that you can safely access element 10? Sorry, not in this universe!
If you'd like me to post a program that will almost certainly crash because of that, then let me know.

Don't go making out that some random thing that you think you know, is from the C standard, even if it is true. You should either say that you 'think' the standard says X, or you post the exact lines from the standard.
