malloc calloc and free

I think there's no problem with casting to the return value of malloc...

Usually, yes. Just to confirm: did you #include <stdlib.h>?

It looks like your string at u_char body[256]; was not NULL terminated.

so u_char body[255] isn't null terminated? how can I make it to be NULL terminated without declaring it as a char?

initialize what? if you ask initialize frame->body, then here's how I do it:

fread(frame->body, 1 , 256, stdin);

so you enter exactly 256 characters into it? there is no place for nul-terminator then

use

fprintf("%256.256s", frame->body);

to print it

or

fprintf("%*.*s", len,len,frame->body);
to print len bytes of it
