Question Reading SAS data sets from C (or C++)

Does anyone have any experience of accessing SAS data sets from C or C++? I have asked the SAS people at my site and they have no clues. I have mailed SAS technical support but as yet have no reply. It must be possible as I know that a number of ETL tools and other data viewing utilities can do it. Any help appreciated.
