and, do you think that if you know the poet personally, your idea of the poem changes? i think yes. sorry but i don't remember which lyfe was when i knew shakespeare, or even if i knew him at all...
"But if the while I think on thee dear friend"
"All losses are restored, and sorrows end"
if i knew him, i hope i would feel the same about his sonnet 30.
so... any poets? i don't know any of you, so i wouldn't feel...
My name is Yoshi the Poet.
can i read some of your work?
I write some, mostly when I'm sad; and most of it sucks.
In My Brain:
it feels pain.
In my Brain
there is pain
when I think.
I feel pain
In my brain.

No, poetry is definitely hard - good poetry. Bad poetry is easy - rhythm is hard, and rhythm is important: if you disagree, then you suffer some malady similar to being tone deaf.
Metaphors aren't hard, but good one are.
Rhyme is trivial jangling, to steal Milton's idea - good rhyme is not easy. Poetry is not cleverness although Marvell certainly impresses with his hidden testing of the reader by his keener eye.
Of course, to steal from T.S. Eliot ("good poets steal"), the poet is the medium of the time, one who finds the essential rhythme of life or a period.
To know a poet is to know his works; what is Shakespeare but his canon? The man himself is of no significance, the works well-wrought urns. To quote a czech poet, "who you are is not important."
I'm a poet:
I have a shoe
I don't like you
Your mother eats poo
The sky is blue
She lives in the bay
while she eats hay
He says no way
His name starts with a K
Ha! I call that "rambling bull.......... poetry" It's the only kind of poetry for men who are not "in touch with their feminine side" (in other words GAY).
I have written a few poems in my life.
My favorite one is the one I wrote earlier this month...I gave it to a girl...she thought it was sweet...and now I am dating her. :D :D :D :D :D
I like that one...
