Networking with XP Pro
I'm extremely angry!!!
I installed Windows XP Professional in both computers, and I've connected them through a network, but it's not working!!!
Ping is working perfectly, this means that both network adapters, the network cables and the Hub are working properly
but when I use Network Neighborhood (I don't know the XP name for this in English), it says that I don't have access to the workgroup!!!
I've tried the problem solver that comes with Windows, but it still doesn't work!!!
does someone has a small network with XP Pro that works??, and if so, please, I beg you to help me..
oh, and most games work perfectly in here, but I can't share files, which is even more important!!!
sorry, this message is to subscibe to the thread, I forgot to do it, erase it if you want
I'm on Win2K Pro, so I guess its the same procedure I went through....
I have a Win98 Box that I could access no problems, but to get it to read my main PC I had to create a logon user for it and set its password.
I think it went;
1. Win 98 was called for the sake of argument PC2,
2. I created a user on My Win2k called "PC2"
3. I tried to access My win2k machine from PC2 and it prompted for a password.
4. Typed in the password and checked box for Windows to save it
5. End of problem
This worked for me and I figured it out myself with a little tinkering, so I'm not sure of a better/proper/alternative way.
Have a go...see how you get on
Oh and uh.....you might have to set the sharing privilages for each drive you wish to access based on the new "User" you created
hmmm, let me tell you this:
when I installed Windows XP in my pIII 500, I first installed 98 in the other hard drive, then installed 98 in the first drive and updated 98 to XP
when I installed XP in my P4 1700 (after that), I moved the second hard drive (only win98) and directly updated it to XP, but on both times I installes 98, i specified the same computer name, necause of that, it created two accounts, one called administrator, and another one calles Oskilian (the name of the machine), both with full privileges, but I had to change the names of the machines... one to OSKILIAN2, and the other one to RAPAPAING, but the user name didn't change, so I still have the Oskilian username on both computers AND they both have the same password. They're both in a workgroup called Rapasoft
The error message says the following (Translated):
"You don't have access to Rapasoft. It may be that you are not allowed to use this network resource. Get in contaclt with this server's administrator to check if you have access allowed.
The server list of this workgroup is not available at this time"
In 2k->control panel->System->Network Identification there's a properties button that allows your PC to join a workgroup.
Dont know if this applies to XP, but have a look
well, there's Computer's name, and it says that it's used to identify your computer in a network
Description: The Power PC
Full computer name: Rapapaing
the other one:
Description: Pentium III
Full computer name: oskilian2
everything's fine here.
Do you have a shared folder / drive on both PC's?
hmm, I'm afraid so. Windows XP automatically shares a folder called "Shared Files", but I also shared another folder...
I wonder what the problem is...
I had a few problems installing a xp network when a machine had aol on it, after i removed AOL's adapters from the machine my network worked fine, I think it was version 6.0 not for sure, it was a friends pc. If you have other adapters on your card you might wanna try removing them if you have the time and try trouble shooting from that aspect. Dunno maybe that will help you.. Good luck!
Thanks man, but I don't have AOL. but the drivers thing has made me think: I'm using the drivers Windows XP comes with. I have the drivers disk for one computer, and the System Board CD for the other one, what do you think: do I try the original drivers? or do I try something else?
I'm not doing it without asking because I'm having lots of trouble with my webpage and I don't want to experiment with my computer. So please tell me what you think before I do so
Well, the other thing is that I'm logging in with the same username and password in both computers (I don't think that would be a problem)
A guy who knows a lot about networking suggested me to install NetBEUI, I currently have
-Microsoft network client
-Microsoft file and printer sharing
-NWLink IPX/SPX compatible transfer protocol
but there is no NetBEUI in the new protocol dialog...
as for TCP/IP, one PC is 188.8.131.52 and the other one is 184.108.40.206 (a third computer is 220.127.116.11, but it's not connected to the network yet). Both computers have subnet mask 255.255.255.0, no gateway and no DNS
