Frustrated by Code Red and now Nimda, the DSL provider DSL.net (a CLEC and reseller of Covad) has shut off 800+ infected customers. They claim they cannot get in touch with all of their customers, so they're just shutting them all down, and waiting for the customer to call them. When/if the customer does call they are informed that they are infected with the Nimda virus and must remove it before they will be reactivated. But how are customers supposed to fix the problem when their internet connection is shut down? "
that seems a bit of an over-reaction, isnt it the responsibility of the provider to protect their servers and equipment?
yes but MS is failing to prevent the virus from spreading and the ISP cant so they have no choice...it's either that or risk everyone elses computer, especially considering the billions worth of damage other viruses have done.
when MS gonna patch this anyway?
I think I migh have finally beat Nimda although I'm not 100% sure. Basically Symantec said that if you want to be 100% positive than you have to reformat your hard drive and re-install your operating system.
I wiped out 99% of it with antivirus cures from at least 2 different companites and downloaded every damn upgrade that MS has! I think I'm okay now. That was a killer virus. I have never seen anything like that. It went right into my system and had Admin privlidges ect. It's much harder to kill a virus on Win2k than on Win9X/ME.
I don't like the look of the future with all these virii. This virus was able to spread itself using 3-4 different methods. The day that you have to open an attachment are long gone. The virus writers are far more sophisticated now.

also unfortunatly true...
viri writers and the code have advanced but computer security doesnt seem to have advanced at the same rate.
