View Full Version : An improvement for the board...

Queatrix

So many people now ask questions, and are asked what compiler they are using.

I honestly think that adding a new item on the left side of your post (where the Location, Posts, and Join Date go) would be a good improvement for this board.

That new item would be a Compiler item. Seeing how this board runs on PHP, it wouldn't be hard for the webmaster to do.

It would prevent a great number of posts from being posted, and it's a lot more important than where you live.

Please give your opinion on this idea, Queatrix.

I like it. :)

If people don't put it on their signatures, why would they put it on some new field buried inside User CP options?

And there's also the User Title.

I see you point, but I noticed that you asked me in a thread just today what compiler I was using, even though it is in my sig.

Yes. That's because you made mention to something that I knew for a fact it wouldn't compile in any of the compilers you have in your sig. So I wondered what else were you using.

>If people don't put it on their signatures, why would they put it on some new field buried inside User CP options?
Because a User CP option would at least inform them that it's potentially useful information, as opposed to having them somehow divine that fact and put it in their signature.

It won't take them more than a day on the boards for the idea of putting the compiler in their sig suddenly pop out in their heads :)

I see this as useful, though Dev-C++ is not a compiler.

I used have them in my sig, then it wend all inviable, then that went away, and now it's colorful. Perhaps if it was a form on registration, just a tick option, if you get me.

I give all credit to major_small for my sig - http://cboard.cprogramming.com/showpost.php?p=588241&postcount=49 All I did was change the letters.

It annoys me when people have sigs longer than their own post, it would be nicer to have this a profile item rather than taking up room in your sig.

Where'd you come from?

Was your sig not like this - (sorry for the lack of color)

dev-c++ on win2kpro.
Visit my website.

? Just thought about it when you mentioned "It annoys me when people have sigs longer than their own post"

Queatrix

Yes, but more like this:

dev-c++/visual-c++ on win2kpro.
Visit my website.

Visual stinks!

You prefer dev? Hmmm. I'm kinda the opposite. I should try out code::blocks to see what that's like. never used it before.

It annoys me when people get annoyed at the most ridiculous things. I have my sig the way I want it, thank you. Besides my sig is as big as small my post will be.

Now, go get annoyed at something else.

You have no idea how much I agree with you! Well, perhaps you do actually. Sigs are capped at 500 characters (even though with all the color formatting of mine and whatnot, it's 1200. I guess it's only visible ones which count)

Heh, I didn't mean it that way, Mario. just in the sense of not counting towards the sig-character-count.

Your avatar annoys me.

Dev-C++ is a smaller than Visual-C++, but I find it a lot more user friendly. And when you spend most your time on the computer in the compiler, that really counts!

BTW: I noticed you sized your sig down too. :p

Heh. And after all I've done for you ... :( I like the change in personalised title, BTW

Yeah, It was very long and hard to read, apparently. I'm gonna make it longer again (MySQL's up'in running in my site now)

457 Byte count on your sig Mario... according to crimson editor that is.

I like it but don't think it would help since most people that fail to mention compiler will probably fail to read the FAQ much less a profile.

DavidP

some of us use more than one compiler.

ad esempio, io.

Queatrix

So? You just use Compiler1/Compiler2.

pianorain
09-17-2006, 09:19 PM
some of us use more than one compiler.Echo this. While I like the idea, I don't think it will help that much. If I'm using more than one compiler, I'll still have to tell you which one I'm using; the compiler field becomes noise. If a newbie doesn't fill in the field, he/she still has to tell you which one he/she is using; the compiler field is meaningless. Even worse, let's say I usually use one compiler, but then I start using another one and forget to change my profile; the compiler field is just wrong.

major_small

it's a good idea, but like other people have brought up, lots of people use many compilers and different languages... and some people don't use any compilers...

for example, when I was in school, I was using at least 3 C/C++ compilers, 2 java 'compilers', a VB compiler, not to mention PHP and Perl.

and Dev-C++ isn't a compiler btw ;)

Because you have to use BBCode, not HTML!!!

I could care less.
