Gamedev is a load of crap! They permanently banned me for creating another account while I was banned. Permanently banned for creating another account? What kind of forum is this (gamedev forum)? That's not right, since it was my first incident, and they never gave me a warning. I mean... I know life isn't fair, but d**** it's a forum for christ sake, a place where people type WORDS! No physical assault, nothing, its all virtual. I don't get it. They thought I was 'ban evading', which I was, so they automatically perm ban me. Those guys must be some hardcore nerds or something...."NO! OMFG! You can't ban evade! ZOMG! Banned...." They are so wack...

And we should care about this...why? Are you saying that we should ban you too? :)

So you admit to it and you are mad? Its kinda like jay-walking and then getting a ticket. Its not very serious... but still its against the law and by rights they can ticket you...

Let me say that if you do the same thing here I'll ban you myself.

It's just the bloody internet people! I think some people take it a little to far....sad indeed. I guess they feel power banning others...if that's even possible in virtual space. They take it as if it's a federal offense! It's funny I think...OMFG! 2 ACCOUNTS? HE MUST HAX...It's a forum for christ sake, not LIFE, get that threw your thick nerd skulls! :D

OMFG! 2 ACCOUNTS? HE MUST HAX...Actually, they more likely think... "OMFG! 2 ACCOUNTS? HE MUST HAVE NO RESPECT FOR OUR RULES..."

It's not just the internet. It's webspace... that someone is paying for. And just like their home, they have the right to set rules and kick out whoever they want.

Calm down mate, they were more in the right than the wrong in my opinion

You got banned, so thought you'd make another account? That undermines the whole point of bans, so serves you right is all i can say

Snacks must be back.

*W.T. Snacks was a admin at 4chan, until moot decided to remove his privileges for internal reasons. During his presence at 4chan, he was not very popular. This was largely due to large amount of bans he passed out.

It's not like just because it's the internet, everything is less meaningful. It kind of is, but not really.

Exactly!
So... you know... don't sulk you were banned. It's just the internet!

Did you expect ban evading to not apply to you?

Sentral
06-29-2006, 07:01 PM
No...I didn't expect it to apply to me because I'm too 1337....tsk tsk tsk

>It's just the bloody internet people!
And just because people are separated by who knows how many miles of copper or fiber, they're somehow less human? That's kind of like making prank calls to the whitehouse and then claiming that "it's just the telephone, people!" when the FBI comes to get your butt.

>I think some people take it a little to far....sad indeed.
A lot of work goes into building and maintaining a smoothly running community. You can trivialize it all you want, but it's really no different in concept than protecting your property from vandals.

>I guess they feel power banning others...
Could be. I won't deny that a feeling of power is a motivating force for not a few people on the web.

>They take it as if it's a federal offense!
Rules are set up for a reason. If they're not enforced, the community will begin a downward spiral and probably never recover. If you spent years getting gamedev up and running to your satisfaction and then somebody started a chain of events that could destroy it, what would you do?

>It's a forum for christ sake, not LIFE, get that threw your thick nerd skulls!
Do you realize that a lot of forum owners actually make a living with it? Dani over at Daniweb quit school to maintain her site and forum full time. She makes a living off it, and could sell it at any time for quite a bit more than you would expect. Perhaps you should get *that* through *your* thick skull and respect the effort that so many people put into such things.

There's still a strong imagery of the internet being the place were everything is possible. Where social interaction has few, if any, rules, and one can say whatever it comes to their minds. Mostly this comes from that strange feeling of security people get from being for the most part anonymous.

The internet has not many rules, true. Nothing much other than those set by the TCP/IP protocol. However social interaction does have them. On the streets, at home, at work, over the phone, on the internet, and between little green men from Mars and blue jelly fishes from Xparkhzyan.

Irresponsibility is not breaking the rules here and there. It is thinking that it will have no consequences and worst; complaining when it did have consequences.

The "It is just the internet" (whatever that may mean) that allowed you to say whatever you want, is the same "It is just the internet" that allowed someone to ban you.

Consequences, lad. That's the keyword.

Congratulations, Sentral!
This has to be the most immature, useless thread this board has seen in a long time. Your post reeks of a teenage, know-it-all, the-rule-don't-apply-to-me attittude that makes me want to vomit.

Let me make things real clear for you. This is how things work in the really real world - which includes the internet:
GameDev set up their forum with certain rules. One of which was avoiding rude behavior, another was not creating an account once you've been banned. You joined this site voluntarily, and by doing so agreed to abide by their rules. No one made you join. You chose to. Knowing the rules, you broke them. For rude behavior, you were banned. Instead of waiting out your 'sentence' or making amends to be reinstated, you violated another rule. You were caught ban-evading, and awarded a shiny new perma-ban. Now you act surprised and indignant that they did exactly what they said they would if you broke their rules. You voluntarily agreed to their rules and punishments when you joined. Deal with it.

Your theory (only correct in some cases) that mods get off on the power of banning people is very analogous to you. You take the 'power' of anonymity on the internet to mean you can do what you want, when you want, because no one can punish you "in real life."

In 30 years or so when you finally move out of your parents house, you'll understand.
*edit*(Now of course, Sentral, I'm taking a chance with that last line, as it is technically in violation of CBoard's rules - #8. If there is a mod out there with a love of irony, I very well might get banned for it. I'm taking a chance, and if they ban me, I knew what I was doing and I'm just going to have to take it.)

Echo Decrypt's reply.
I haven't seen a monstrosity such as this since I first hit cboard.
I think there's a good few people here who'd agree.

Wow! So much anger amongst this thread! No need to get angry at me, since I did nothing wrong to you. BTW it's only a month ban, so I should be back on. Also, I'll remember to be rude to you guys if you mess up, sounds fair?

I thought they gave you warnings first. I'm pretty sure that if you were rude for only a short period of time, and you went from no warning to a permanent IP ban, then you could probably make your case to the owners of the website.

I had a friend that emailed the owners of gamedev to convince them that he and his brother both wanted accounts, but only one could get one because they had the same IP (shared via a router). The owner of the website let them have both accounts on the same IP (otherwise, if you register another account on the same IP the new one is automatically niched).

have you read any replies in this thread at all? Before posting again,
at any forum, please do reread this thread very carefully and try to
understand what we are trying to tell you.

No, they didn't give me any warnings.

I read the posts, as a matter of fact! Let me guess what you are trying to tell me....um....I'M A DUMB***? Maybe it's....hm....DON'T BREAK THE RULES! :D

No. It's more:

1. this isn't just the internet
2. expect consequences to your actions
3. be responsible of your own actions and don't blame others for doing their job.
and ...
4. be less of a moron
