I don't have the smart learnin' or the gas money to attend the event, but have fun.

You don't get there by money... you need to be one of the best programmers in your state.
My state is small and stupid, so i might go...

Yeah, apparently they hold a competition (CCC) at Waterloo high school students (http://cemc.uwaterloo.ca/ccc/past/previous_contests.shtml). You go in a qualifying competition and get within the top 20, to enter a stage 2 competition with determines if you get to go to the IOI competition.

I didn't even know about it. Oh well, I'm a newbie anyway.

Well it's money what so ever...
Excuse my english, I'm a Serbian ( Serbians are people that live somewhere in Europe, more exactly in Bosnia and Hercegovina, that's near Croatia ... and they don't speak English nativly)

well that's one pressing question answered, but I assume you took what I said to mean that gas money somehow buys your way into the competition (it could if you crashed your car in the place) but I just meant to drive there, if you live in the same country, whcih I assume you don't.

For him it's more like plane ticket money as gas money would probably get him no further than a couple dozen feet into the Adriatic Sea. Less if he's in one of his native Yugos.

If you have the money to get there and you're willing to use it, then go right ahead, but all indigo said was he didn't have the money (or the will to use the money) to go so he isn't.

then there's the whole fact as I'm probably not smart enough to qualify (though I'm not dumb enough to enter thinking otherwise ;) )

Seems really odd to hold an olympiad of informatics in Mexico

Yugos? They are sold internationally, you know...

They may not be bought internationally, but they are sold internationally. :)

Anyway, I also had a nanny growing up who was from Serbia. She was still young. Now I think she lives in Florida and became a dentist.

No, I'm sorry. She taught me a few words, but that was years ago and I've forgotten them.

Every year it changes, just like the real olympics :)

Well, I got invited to the final selection proces for the aussie team, but I was away in germany at the time, so didn't go.
Ah well, yet another oppertunity in life missed, because a second was on at the same time.

Of course, it was something like the top 20 out of the whole 60 who did it, and half those 60 have never programmed before, hardly heavy competition.

SlyMaelstrom

hardly heavy competition. So it's less like the real Olympics and more like that kiddie crap in D2: The Mighty Ducks 2, eh?
