It's time for the 6th 72 Hour Game Development competition! Before the competition begins, participants vote on a desired theme for a game. After the voting is finished, the theme is released and teams have a tight 72 hour deadline to develop the best game possible. The competition is very informal, and everyone has a lot of fun. This time around, the competition starts on Friday, March 24th. For more information on rules, participation, etc, please visit http://www.pixel-arts.org/72/. Make sure to sign up for an account and create a team so you may enter the competition.

If i had the time i would. I saw your entry last year and it looked like a lot of fun. I recommend this to anyone with a little free time and a passion for games!

Anywhere we can see previous competitions and submissions? I took a quick look on the website but didn't see anything off hand.

We're working on that. The owner of the old site spontaneously decided to delete the entire website so we lost everything. Now we're having to manually try and get all the old entries back together so it's a bit tedious (somewhere around 100 games we need to sort through).

Are these done completely from scratch? If not, they should
be. Because if it's only programmers entering -- programmers
who are using free sprites from the internet, that really trivializes
the job that the artists do; and is in no way an accurate depiction
of game development -- because as we all know, the artists are
the most important people in game development nowadays.

Not sure exactly what you're talking about, but yes, all entries in the competitions are done completely from scratch. You're allowed to use *very* basic code like window creation but everything from there needs to be hand-made, no pre-made game engines or anything like that.

Also, all art, music, and the like must be created on-spot during the competition, nothing from the internet.

I have to ask: What kind of assurance does this competition have that these games truly are made in 72 hours? How do you know people haven't been working on these games for weeks prior?

Not to say anyone would lie... but... well someone would lie...

You can't. If you don't do that it's your own fault. Seeing as the competition's more about fun than anything (there's no huge prizes), it's more your own loss. It's a hell of a lot of fun to see what you can come up with in the 72 hours and definitely is very self rewarding to see your work at the end of the three days (assuming you finished it somewhat reasonably).

I'm looking forward to jverkoey's submission. I played last year's pirate themed game for several hours. And I NEVER play games. Make this one count!

Yeah, I think I can compete if it's a FPS type game.

Anyone know if Doom is still open source?

Why are you basing your possibilities merely on a FPS-style game? The goal of these competitions is innovation so unless you've already got some idea for the game you're destroying the feel for the competition by limiting yourself to one particular engine.
