It's awsome. Go check it out when you can.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http%3A%2F%2Fmaps.google.com

or just maps.google.com

Click the satallite button on the upper right. Not the best detail for rural areas, but cities are great.

that really is amazing... the satellite image has my gf's house on it, but google's marker is on the other side of the road :D

some of the images are too low-quality to be of much use (you can't even zoom in too closely on them) but that's probably because at the time they were taken, there wasn't much there...

zoom inhere (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=university+of+illinois+chicago&ll=41.871761,-87.650042&spn=0.007457,0.008132&t=k&hl=en) to see my school. There are two over 20 story buildings that look tiny....only the shadows they cast show their true size.

They were build after WW2 and during cold war; the architect designed them so that they seem small from a plane (so they wouldn't be potential targets) he kind of forgot about dun and shadows me thinks....anyways, the building are skinnier on the first half, and fatter on the top: university hall (http://www.uofpp.uillinois.edu/docs/UIC/images/0604%20Campus%20Core/0604E17%20CAMPUS%20CORE%20UH.JPG)

Interesting... I could make out the roads and stuff where I live, but they didn't have close-ups, and I live in a fairly big city outside of DC.

I took a screenshot of my house, but I couldn't attach it because it was a little bigger than 640X480. Is there any way we can get that bumped up to something a little bigger? 800X600 would be fine, I think.

if you don't mind us knowing where you live, you can link us... or you can just zoom in manually to your house and send us that link...

So... I wonder how long it will take them to bring everything else up? And I wonder how often new images will be taken? Or how recent the current ones are?

probably just on a regular spacecam-type schedule... some of the images I've looked at are pretty old...

Heh. Michigan cloudy? Never.

How close are you to the airport, d00der? (I could so wait til I get home and just use your address (because I don't have it here), huh?)

Yeah... www.keyhole.com and click on the "what google will do with us" link... it shows you how old the images are.

jumping to the meat of the link:
Keyhole continuously updates its database with the average age of imagery ranging from 18 to 24 months. Imagery can vary in age from as new as 2-3 months to as old as 2-3 years. Keyhole is increasingly taking advantage of satellite imagery to update the Keyhole database more aggressively. I still suggest you follow the link--you can find out how old the pictures of your area are.

I'm a little less than 10 miles west of the airport (if by airport you meant Metro)

I dunno... I just saw landing strips.

There's a smaller airport (Willow Run) right across 94 from me, and then Detroit Metro is just down the road to the east.

I raised the size limit to 1000x800.

I'm so going to turn the satellite lasers on you.

EDIT: I'd post mine, but it's just a blurry mess and the pic is really old.

did anybody else notice that the little information bubble google pops up puts a shadow on the satellite image?

Yeah... it does it on the map version too.
