View Full Version : Opera is faster than Firefox...

Just what I've been saying:

http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html

:p

So overall, Opera seems to be the fastest browser for windows. Firefox is not faster than Internet Explorer, except for scripting, but for standards support, security and features, it is a better choice. However, it is still not as fast as Opera, and Opera also offers a high level of standards support, security and features.

7 seconds for Internet Explorer to start in Windows XP?
For me, it starts in a second, at most.

its frickin 39 dollars, who the hell pays for browsers these days!?!?!?!?!

Getting Firefox = $0
Getting Netscape = $0
Getting Internet Explorer = $0
Getting Opera = $39
Figuring out that you wasted 40 bucks so that your browser loads 6 seconds faster than normal = Priceless

Go firefox wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot

omg i just installed opera, and now it takes like 5 seconds for the start menu to load, even after i restarted - yet another reason why opera sucks

Dont blame issues with your pc on opera. Also, as many people also seem not to realize, you DO NOT have to pay for opera. And who would pay it? I would, and so would almost everyone i have turned on to opera. Ken is posting a factual thread about a browser favorite to many of us, dont turn it into a this sucks that sucks load of crap.

lol - another browser flame...

The cold start time for FF under Linux must not be for the static version..

Firefox 1.0 6.09

I know it does not take 6 seconds for mine to start.

As an aside, does anybody have any troubles with gmail while using opera?

edit::

I did not pay $39 for Opera either - I would not have it if I had to pay that much. See, its on my computer, and is a buddy to FF:

If you mean through the website? No never nadda. If you mean using its pop feature in opera, its gmails fault.

At first yes. you have to go into the settings in gmail and check "Allow/Enable pop mail for all....". You also have to configure opera properly as gmail doesnt use the standard ports and such for this. if thats what you meant i can walk you through it.

I meant through the website - apparently Opera 7.54 for Linux does not meet the requirements for gmail - if I use the default settings for browser id, (I believe that would be IE 6) I get this message:

Gmail requires ActiveX controls to be enabled

If I set identity as Opera or Mozilla, it will allow me to login, but then all I get after I enter my username/password is a white screen. Kind of weird.

Yes Opera is Faster. But you can make speed up Firefox, and then Firefox is fast. Test it than against Opera!

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

Sites that loaded slowly in the past pop up quickly now.

No, the maximum requests it allows is 8, but yes, it speeds it up some.

It speeds it up some. But remember opera is faster out of the box, and there are "tweaks" for it just like you posted for ff, so again, opera is faster.

Identify as opera and choose sign in anyway as the gmail option. I use opera 8 but i never had issues with 7.6 either. I think i was using 7.54 when i got my gmail, perhaps why i upgraded.

EDIT: Version 8 can be a little difficult to find since its in beta, its kinda buried on the site. So here it is off my server.

There was no 7.6, RoD. 7.54 couldn't do GMail (they have technical reasons posted somewhere on opera.com), but Opera8 (which is sometimes called '7.6,' because people don't think it has enough features to warrant a new major version number) works just fine with GMail.

Yes, if you increase pipelining and 'hammer' the servers, you can speed anything up.

The very very earlier release of 8 was called "Opera 7.6 BETA", then it became a revised version in opera 8 beta. I still have the original downloaded file that they themselves named 7.6 BETA.

well i wonder why opera has so many green boxes? it couldnt be because he is testing 3 versions of opera versus one version of firefox, now could it?

RoD

I've used firefox, both new and old. I wont form an opinion based on ignorance of having never used the software. I dont like it, i like opera, and this thread is exactly why.

OK, but if you actually compare all of the numbers, the latest version of Opera still beats the latest version of Firefox. I don't see your point. Also, he does use two versions of FF, although I have no clue what Moox is (edit: Oh, an optimized version).

Anyway, who cares what browser you use? I just thought it was funny, since every time I say that I like Opera because it renders and feels faster, people are quick to tell me that, No, Firefox renders faster.

My brower displays html files. im happy. i use *******.
If one browser takes 2 seconds longer than another to load then who cares? and if you do care, you have problems.

There was no 7.6, RoD.
Weird because when I go into About: Opera it tells me:

Version 7.60 not that it really matters. Opera > Firefox (And yes I have both)

I use the Mozilla suite. It beats Firefox AND Opera because it comes with more stuff out of the box that I use. ;)

Also, I was almost positive that there was no 7.6; guess I was wrong. I guess I wasn't checking the Beta forums enough.

It's easy to infer how adept a computer user is by their response to the question, "What do you think of Opera?" ;)
