This was too good to pass up. :)
From the archives of NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System publication, CALLBACK (http://asrs.arc.nasa.gov/callback_issues/cb_241.htm):

I had been playing "Space Invaders" for about two straight hours when I and an inexperienced co-pilot were launched to find a man believed to be injured who was lost in dense underbrush. After we got to the search pattern only 100 to 200 feet above the ridgeline we were searching, I started "seeing" (imagining) the Space Invaders descending down the windscreen. I gave the helicopter to my co-pilot, who continued the search at a higher, safer altitude. It took me about two minutes to de-program the Space Invaders out of my vision.

Why did this happen? Two hours of self-induced strong visual programming plus mental exhaustion from a normal day and intense game "arcade fever" combined to catch me off guard in a quiet moment in the I am sillyI am sillyI am sillyI am sillypit...The knowledge that I was dangerously close to "granitus" and a well-developed ability to concentrate on the instruments and facts pulled us out of that situation. Needless to say, I donít spend that extended a time period in the arcade anymore! (June 1984, #60)

*edit*
The filter is obviously a bit wacked. Anyway, the word censored out is the "part of an aircraft from which the pilot(s) fly the aircraft".

I'm never playing arcade games ever again! *Runs away in the woods*

Sometimes after playing a lot of GTA or Carmageddon I'm tempted to use my ebrake to fishtail and run someone over. Haven't given in yet, but the traffic around here is making me start to wonder when it'll happen

I often feel like whipping out a BFG and laying waste to the people in whatever long checkout line I happen to be standing in.

Unfortunately my pants can't hold a shotgun, pistol, flashlight, plasma gun, and BFG at the same time, but yeah.

Just store a manipulator gun in there instead. Whip it out, pick up trolleys/carts with it and watch how people react when they see them hurtling through the air towards them as fast as a good tennis serve.

Anyone here play DDR? I got it some time ago, and shortly afterward I began to experience the peculiar phenomenon of compulsive side-stepping :p

Well, at least your addiction won't kill anyone, unless you sidestep off a cliff or in front of my skidding car or something :p

i once spent about a week programming without talking to anyone (well, almost) and when i went to see my mom the first thing i said was 'push line of text can i have some scrambled eggs'

that didn't really happen but damn it would have been quite amusing! but my mom probably would've hit me, because she's awesome

You'd fit right in driving in New Mexico. :D

Everytime I'm outdoors and hear a loud high pitched noise, I flip out thinking a cliff racer is attacking me.

In class sometimes I move the desks around and place large yellow circles all over in a pattern and then proceed to run around and collect all of the yellow circles before my teacher can catch me....

and all this time I'm going "wokka wokka wokka"

The new game better have a quest where you hunt cliff racers to extinction. Stupid freaking cliff racers

Haha, I hate cliff racers too. There was even a mod people downloaded to remove all of them from the game.
Luckily with my Ebony staff, I can shoot 400 poison balls ( -90% poison resist, 88 poison damage ), so they arenīt a problem anymore :D

And, according to behaviorism, the more you play space shooters for two hours and then go play with your helicopter, the less your front visor will be attacked. On the other hand you probably will install laser guns on it and shoot people, but you need real weak social skills to do that.

The character I beat the game with could easily outrun them, so I didn't think they were a problem either :)

edit: God what a great game

I found a mod that did exactly that. It was BY FAR the most rewarding quest I accomplished in the game :D

Govtcheez

That's not the same mod dead tree's talking about, is it? It seems like it'd be a lot more rewarding to kill them off than just remove them.

PJYelton
01-19-2005, 09:59 AM
No, it was an actual quest that took a couple of hours to complete, involved killing a whole bunch of them, and at the end you took on a super cliff racer. But when done they all disappeared. I don't remember the name of the mod, its been almost a year since I've played, I'll see if I can figure it out.

I just modded their aggro ratings so they stopped attacking me. They're pretty when they stay the hell away.

You think it's funny now but how about I put you in the barrel of the T-135?

http://civildefensemuseum.com/sirens/t135/remove/Dscf0027.jpg

Yeah that's right, a 6 foot man can easily fit in the horn. 135dB @ 100 feet on axis, much louder at point blank range. Can you say popping blood vessels? Or maybe the Chrysler? 138dB @ 100' -- 1kw power? Want to feel what's it like to be microwaved?

You're right, this siren thing is hilarious! :D

Yeah, you often don't realize just how big these things are when up on the poles. They do, after all use rotors, motors, projector horns, deflector plates and all sorts of engineering specifics to create over 100dB of sound outside unconfined.

http://www.wisconsinsirens.com/pics/La%20Crosse%201.jpg The Thunderbolt siren on a pole. 127dB @ 100 feet.

http://datadrops.com/temp/tbolt1.jpg
http://datadrops.com/temp/tbolt2.jpg The same siren size comparison.

http://www.wisconsinsirens.com/pics/Endeavor%201.jpg Workhorse Model 5 siren. 105dB @ 100 feet.
http://longislandfirealarm.com/humanmodel5.jpg Size comparison.

(get videos and sounds at my siren site)

Now you know why they move these things around with cranes.

Would that suck if that went off while he was in that position?

Shadow
01-23-2005, 01:30 PM
That's why he has that smile on his face. "I hope this thing doesn't go off"

Of course it would. 127dB @ 100 feet! Like 156dB at that range!

As long as Govtcheez degrades him ruthlessly for the mess he leaves on the way up, I'm straight.

Uncle Alex, can you fix the swear filter pweeease? They say biotch on network TV all the time. :(
