There are model creators like Maya and 3DsMax (http://www4.discreet.com/3dsmax/) that I know of. I believe there are some free ones around, start with those and build up, otherwise you're going to open 3DsMax and be like "omg..." :(

Milkshape 3D (http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/ms3d/index.html) is a good starting point. It's shareware, so you get a 30 day trial period to give it a test drive.
