Okay...for the last two hours, I've been surfing the net to find a very simple answer but suprisingly simply couldn't get a straight answer :mad: . So, I am turning up for your help guys :)...So here it is...

I just wanted to know that what 'L' and '2' stands for in an auto gear car and when do we use them?

L and 2 are for lower gears, like if you need extra torque or something.

hmm...perhaps you are right about the 'L' but are you sure about '2' ? Because once while overtaking I changed the gear from 'D' to '2' and it was running like a rocket (or in the rare case it might be my imagination :rolleyes: ) with higher engine sound .

Woot....I can finally use my auto tech knowledge:

"Low" gear is a ratio where a driving force is going much faster than a driven force, around a 3:1 ratio. In automatic transmissions, this is usually from a driving propeller pushing an impellor with oil. This give much more torque and takeoff, but it won't give you much speed. "2nd" gear is another torque gear, but not as much as low. Then it hits 1st, which is usually at or close to a 1:1 rotation. Some transmissions have a overdrive (around 0.8:1) but in automatics it ends up using a lot more gas for a very little gain.

I think all that is right :) ....

That's sounds right to me. For low gears, you should get high rpms and a lot of power but not go very fast, and for high gears you should get less power and go much more quickly.

Also, I thought you use L or 2 for driving in the snow so you don't spin your tires and lose control, and for driving down hill it just won't let you go as fast...

And I thought first gear came before second gear (and then 3rd, 4th, etc)?

AFAIK Autos are usually 3 gears + 1 (overdrive)

1 or L is first and I only use it when launching my boat (pulling it out)

2 is second and I never use it. I have a 'lock' setting instead that prevents the car changing a gear, used when I overtake or tow the boat up a steep hill.

But it has never snowed here......

Pretty much never. You can use them if you're hauling something really heavy and need extra torque but not speed or if you're stuck in the snow, I guess. I've never used them.

Depends on the car. Cars usually have between 4-6 gears.

Well in my accord I used '2' a lot after the first gear decided to stop working. So I had to take off from '2' and then move into 'D'.

L and 2nd gear are also used when descending a mountain. Rather than use the brakes to the point the brake fluid boils (very bad, you won't be stopping...) you can put it in a lower gear and coast down.
