View Full Version : Space Quest 7

The "missing chapter" of Space Quest was started but cancelled in 1997, and Space Quest nerds (such as myself) have been mourning it ever since. I used to frequent all the fan sites searching for news, but I lapsed for a few months and only just now discovered a project has been undertaken that is the most promising so far, at SQ7.org. I'm kicking myself for having not done something like that myself, but I just signed up to help and I was wandering if anybody else here is part of the project or interested in doing so.

I'll have to check it out, thanks sean. Although chances are they'll be using the engine that Sierra used to make all the *quest games, which is more or less a fancy and easy to use scripting language. So it's more of a design issue and not a programming one. And from my experience with several designers, most are very partial to their own ideas and won't add anything unless it complies with their vision.

But I will indeed check it out and lend any help I can!

They put out a "call for help" for people wanting to do just that, and it sounds as though Sierra is on the verge of collapse. It also appears that they're coding their own engine. Since starting this thread I have, however, still had grave doubts about the success of the program. Apparently they're having problems with the artists, etc... and on a second glance, this "call for help" doesn't inspire much confidence.

I'm busy scribbling down some code ideas - and I may undertake to do the project myself and try to beat them to it. I'm not a designer, but by your description of them I'm a lot like one already! I also think the series went downhill after number 4 when Scott Murphy and that other guy left Sierra, so I may not be happy at all with what this project is doing. For an open-source program they're awfully secretive about it, and they are admittedly having funding troubles. That's exactly what stopped the Corporate Ventures.

edit: Silly me - they say (on the home page mind you) they are using the 'SLAGE' engine, and writing it themselves. Don't get me wrong, Java's a great language, but not for this kind of project I don't think. They've also made some bad decisions regarding legality. I'm plotting a coup of SQ7.org - who's with me :)

Well what do you want to code it in?? And do you want 2D or 3D like the newer King's Quest that came out about 50 years ago....i mean 5, sorry.
