Hi everybody and a happy new year!

I am considering to buy a portable mp3 player (but do not prefer CD players that support mp3 format). I've never listened to songs on a portable mp3 player and so none of my friends. That's why I don't have a clue about how good the sound quality is on a portable mp3 player. I am asking this because I've seen the quality differs when mp3 format songs are played on different computers depending on the sound card and speakers.

I was wondering if any of you guys can help me on this. Thank you.

I used to have an mp3 player: it was THE CHEAPEST possible one in Australia; Creative's cheapest one and the sound was very decent, so it wouldnt really matter which one you got IMO. Also, the quality of the sound can also depend on what headphones you're using.

I bought my fiance a Nike PSA 128mb (kinda expensive, but the sound quality is unmatched IMO).

I use Nomad MuVo NX 256 MB (http://www.nomadworld.com/products/muvo_nx/) with built-in microphone (extra snooze in class.)

Tag: ~$130 for 128MB, ~$180 for 256MB.

We aren't talking about things like WinAmp, XMMS, etc, but actual hardware MP3 players, like the iPod.

Oh, and by the way, I have a MPIO FL100 128MB (http://www.mpio.com/goods/fl100.php).

i use my Sony Clie tj-35 (PDA) as an mp3 player. works great, sounds great and you can buy any size memory stick from 32MB to 1GB although the big ones are pricey. A PDA is way to expensive if you only want an mp3 player but their a good option if you use PDA's as well.

I've used my friends' iPods, and they're great. Its user interface is very nice. The capacity is enormous. iTunes is nice, too.

I definitely say go with an iPod.

I have a 128mb i-BEAD100 cos its usb powered (no batteries), has fm radio and is tiny. If I was buying another one now, I'd buy one with more memory and no radio (it aint as good as the radio on my phone).

Never really wanted a huge hdd in my pocket, trying to search for my favourite song out of 2000 mp3s is just gonna be such hard work!

You can order an group them in folders just like a PC file system. You can also view them by specified catagories, ie. music type, band, etc. Finding songs isnt very hard.

Of course it still uses batteries. Do you carry around a computer with your MP3 player plugged into it via USB? No? Then it has batteries.

Also, it's quite easy to sort out and find what song you want, like Perspective said. I have 445 songs in my Karma right now, let's see how long it takes me to find a specific song. How about "POD - Will You?"

Click Menu Button
Click Play Music
Click Track
Scroll to W (slider on the side sorts by letter, so it's just holding the stick down to whizz by 21 letters)
Click "Will You"

All of 15 seconds at most.

You see, (most) MP3 players use a database to store meta information, so it's quite easy and fast to sort.

Done.

from mucking around with the mp3 players/cd players we sell at work, i've found that the only real difference in sound quality is in the earphones. Buy the cheapest nastiest piece of work and plug in sony fontopias and it will sound great.

I like the creative muVo 128 myself.

iPOD

It's a stupid song to be certain, but my brother downloaded it and I just transferred all of my MP3s to my Karma. I even still have some horrid "God Bless America"/"911 Nevar 4get" type of song in there that I'm too lazy to get rid of.
