Mandrake 9.1. It took me a couple days to get my internet running. I just went out and bought a NIC card today and plugged it in. It solved everything really fast. I'm loving Linux so far. The whole installing new programs is a little confusing. I'm trying to figure out how to install the shockwave plugin, I just can't find where to install it to. I thought It was the ~/mozilla/plugin directory but It won't let me install there.

to get USB cable modems working for Mandrake you type the following command:

modprobe CDCEther

questions?

God I feel so stupid I don't know that command... I can't even figure out how to get my e-mail working and you expect me to figure out that command? I'm probably going to go get a new theme. I'm liking all the cool games and stuff on Linux so far. There are allot extensions on Linux. Thats my only complaint so far.

Do you use KDE or GNOME or some other desktop? If KDE, good choice. Some people like GNOME for some reason. I used it for about a week and hated it.

Oh, for kde, www.kde-look.org

PS: After a while you'll probably want to move from Mandrake to either RH or Slack. Gentoo is pretty nice, if you have broadband. I think the reason I like Gentoo so much is because it is like a FreeBSD rip off.

KDE and GNOME eat resources like one big window-managing mozilla. It's a good idea to use one of the smaller ones, or wait until someone replaces stupid X.

On a rather low-end system, Gnome and KDE could be a pain...
The smaller ones stated above should among others, include Fluxbox, Blackbox, XFce etc.

zakk: well again, I can play games for Windows w/ Winex..

guy 1: (resumes breathing)..hmm....

:D

Fluxbox is awesome, if you have a older machine it's the best to use, IMHO. I do wish somebody would come out with a alternative to X though. X is so clunky and eats up your resources.
