I've been using computers for a decade now, and I still haven't figured out what scroll lock does.

supposedly in DOS, it would pause the screen when scrolling, or something like that. I don't think it ever worked.

A key on PC and enhanced Macintosh keyboards that controls the way the cursor control keys work for some programs. Many applications ignore the Scroll Lock setting (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/K/Scroll_Lock_key.html)
Link takes you to the page (the text had links on sertain terms)

Tech tv tip...
Have you ever wondered how to use the Scroll Lock button at the top of your keyboard? In Microsoft Excel, the scroll lock is a useful navigation option.

Typically, with scroll lock off, you use the arrow keys to move the active cell pointer around a fixed worksheet. The active cell location changes with each arrow key pressed.

When you use the scroll lock option, the active cell pointer remains in the current cell and the sheet moves rows or columns depending on the direction of the arrow key pressed.

This option is very useful when you want to view other areas of the spreadsheet without losing your current active cell position.

Thanks to Manny in Guam for this tip!

Found them on a google search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=scroll+lock)

>>> it would pause the screen when scrolling,

Not just DOS, in many early character based user interfaces, the Scroll Lock was, indeed, used to prevent information disappearing off the top of the screen before it was read.

I've got a SONY VAIO computer, and there's a problem with Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn. They're on the 4 directional keys to the left of the NumPad. It says you need to push control to use them, but that just works like pressing shift.

Are you sure there isn't an FN key? I've seen some keyboards that have those - ew.
