Hey, I was just wondering why noone ever set up a cprogramming.com SETI@home team? http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ Im sure there are some of you who run it on your pc's. So why dont we set up a team?

Hmm intresting idea...I'll look into it, I run it so lemme look into it and talk to the webmaster.

Oh and I'm adding a Poll to this thread to judge intrest...I think it's a great idea.

Dang won't let me add Poll...well who's intrested?

Heh, how long have you been running it kermi? me just a little over 2 years. have 1880 units completed for 2.156 cpu years

kermi3
09-28-2002, 05:44 PM
ewww I've had it a long time...like my registration date is Oct 3 1999....I have 330 units and 4464 hours...I'd have a lot more but until a month or so ago i was on 56k...so it was a until every couple days...now I do 4-5 a day.

kermi3
09-28-2002, 05:51 PM
I've talked to the webmaster, he's going to set it up. I'll have details in next couple days.

xds4lx
09-28-2002, 05:56 PM
sweet :) I get 5-6 results a day from 2 computers both way different ends of the spectrum, one is Celeron 400@550, and an Athlon xp 1800+

Hammer

Sorry, but you'll have to count me out :(

My home PC isn't on during the day, and if I did it at work, I'd get shot

xds4lx
09-28-2002, 06:09 PM
just run it in the background of your home pc when its on hammer, if you have at least 256 mb or ram then you wont notice a slow down at all, just remember to close it before playing any games ;)

Hammer
09-28-2002, 06:13 PM
Ok then, change of plan.... if we get a team going, count me in.

kermi3
09-28-2002, 06:24 PM
Or leave the home PC on during day :)...Why would you get shot at work? It just hovers in background helping the scietific community and mankinds .

I used to run it on a 166, then a 550 256mb ram, now a 2.0 gig (P4) with gig of ram.

Hammer
09-28-2002, 06:41 PM
>Why would you get shot at work?
Well, there's a number of reasons.... I won't go into them all here though. The simplest rule for me to quote is that I'm not allowed to install software unless it's been company approved, and I'm authorised to use it yaddy yaddy blah blah <corporate site with no vision  >

Of course that's never stopped me before... ;)

my tech admins at school are retarted, i could run it on they're server on its dedicated T1 24/7 and they'd prolly never know.

You guys should make sure that theres a link or something on the main page saying something like join team cprogramming or something so more people see it than just the people on the board.

kermi3
09-28-2002, 07:23 PM
we will...a whole new section of the cp.com site is in the works...

RoD
09-28-2002, 07:24 PM
Yea thats not a bad idea, you could always make a script to prompt a user when registering if they would also like to join the team and send them to an informational page.

jus a thought.

What exactly is the point of it? Also, what would the team be about?

xds4lx
09-28-2002, 10:31 PM
seti = search for extra terestrial life @ home, the project uses the archibo radio telescope to record sound from deep space and then there database breaks it down into work units that your end user client downloads and processes, if your computer finds life then your name will be included in the discovery. The team is just a way to organize groups of people from similar clubs/schools/organizations..... The benefits are for the advancement of human knowledge.

xds4ls gave the basic point, but let me elaborate. They have the telescope time to search for signals that might be extraterrestrials, however they don't have the computing time to process all of their signals. Therefore users all over the world download 341k chunks of the data and proccess it and then return the results. It runs in the background of your computer, or when you are not using your machine. To give you an idea of how behind they are, the unit I'm proccessing now is from 1999.

The point of the team would be for fun, and to pool our efforts. Our computer time would be pooled togeagher and we would be named as a group, and individually, to any discovery. It's for fun .

Count me in, but, i already know that the US Government has already made agreements with aliens which were made in 1947 just after the roswell crash. Soon they are going to stage a fake landing so they can control the flow of information on aliens.

Therefore users all over the world download 341k chunks of the data and proccess it and then return the results.

Well, how often is this 341k chunk downloaded, because I have a crappy 56k? I take it it's not even going to be worth my time to use it since I'm using a 56k; onsidering that very little time wil actually be dedicated towards processing the information with not being able to be online constantly.

xds4lx
09-29-2002, 01:04 AM
depending on how fast your computer is depends on how long it takes to process the 341k. My xp1800+ takes just around 5hrs a unit. Im on DSL so it takes like a few secs to download a uniot or upload the results. When i was on 56k it wasnt that bad, plus its worth it finding aliens ;)

just to note, there are quite a few versions available for all major platforms of *nix and Windows, Mac, ..... Heres a link to the download page: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.html and to the total statistics: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/totals.html if you download it before it downloads a unit it well help you register.

[EDIT]
That means that even people like Troll_King can who dont run windows can participate

If you send your completed units to "Team CProg" for example, do they still count against the correct country, or do they go to the country that is "host" to "Team CProg"?

BTW - Go Team Danmark!

I used to run it on a 56k...for 3 years...:) The download time is only about 1-2 min, their servers keep it at 5k/sec. (Upload time is 10-20 seconds) The biggest effect a 56k has is that it can only connect when you sign on and say it's ok, but there are now programs that let you download multible units are downloaded then processed...then uploaded when you connect again.

I don't know...it probably gives the country credit too since it gives the individual credit...but if you actually discover something and it's confirmed you're going to have half the news stations and half the newspapers in the world will be on your doorstep ;).

We will only do one, don't want to split our resources....heh we'll see which...I'm partial to Seti though (the "Big Time") since I've been doing ti for years...

I can't get folding to work....it won't install.

kermi3
09-29-2002, 11:16 AM
3 Things, first I'm looking into it hehe...
Second, windows, console and regular, though I'd prefer regular...
third....please put your posts all as one instead of takeing after Dean and doing them one after then other. It won't boost your post count because I'm just going to start going through and putting them into one post and deleting the rest. And I hate having to do that. (You can use the edit button to add)

And Seti looks pretty scientific too :).

BMJ
09-29-2002, 11:26 AM
there :)

kermi3

What'd you do delete them all? Either way the problem I'm having is that the folding install won't work. Getting an error message as soon as it unpacks

I'll put it on machines at my school...T1 line and marginal computing speeds...

xds4lx
09-29-2002, 06:53 PM
i always put it on the computers in my schools computer labs but the techs always take it off anywhere from 1-5 days later so it does generate quite a bit of work. I go into this one lab that has 3 different rooms each with 50pc's i have a few breaks during the day so ill go into each room and get on as many pc's as i can..

[EDIT]
oh yeah any word from the webmaster yet kermi?

kermi3
09-29-2002, 07:03 PM
It's being looked into. The group should be setup sometime soon and I'll get everyone the info. It'll be a while longer on a possible new portion of the site.

Seti's good (and I'll join the team), but BMJ's right - Folding's trying to find a cure for cancer - IMHO, that's a little more important than finding aliens.

GaPe
09-30-2002, 07:00 AM
United Devices is too trying to find cure for cancer and for antrax.

kermi3

I have not been able to get folding's non-console to work, so we will probably be going with seti. (It won't install)

BMJ
09-30-2002, 10:26 AM
I don't mind doing SETI instead

xds4lx
09-30-2002, 01:24 PM
seti is great, theres a graphical version or just a command line version, plus its available for many different platforms. I used to run the united devices one for cancer but soon stoped after my gf of the time dumped me (i was running it for her b/c she got lukemia and after me devoting 6 months to being with her non-stop at the hospitol she dumped me and wont talk to me since) and just stick with seti now, plus i think the united devices one found a few things that will fight anthrax.

xds4lx
09-30-2002, 09:45 PM
hate to post again but come on we need more people to sign up and download seti and start work today even before the webmaster has the team registerd with them.

[EDIT]
Or how about one of you mods who are interested make a sticky saying sign up?
