Are these advertisements localized to our area? What I mean is, if I'm in Pakistan am I getting Pakistan ads, if im in New York, New York ads, etc. What kinds of ads are you guys getting? I'm getting a Telus ad.

I haven't noticed any localized ads (I just got expedia and inktomi, too)... I seem to remember nv saying he got ads in German when the new boards went up last summer, though.

The Telus ad is an Alberta ad. That's my home province.

Maybe there are some, then... I don't recall ever seeing a Telus ad... I don't think I've ever seen any local to me, though.

Speaking of ads..... is anyone else getting popups on the boards? I seem to get the same one everyday.

Luckly Konqueror kills the popups for me.

yes, and the popups help pay for the site, Dean.

Opera kills them for me, but I keep that option off to help the site :)

The reason I ask is because popups (http://www.cprogramming.com/cboard/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7553&highlight=popups) used to unacceptable here but maybe they are now financially required like ober said. I am just getting the one so it's not a big deal anyways.

Oh god yea ads pay for sites! My friend's company (the one I work for if you're curious) hosted that stupid HampsterDance stuff when it was new... oh my god! You would cry if you knew how much money she made from advertising in the first months of HampsterDance

I always click on ad banners at least a few times a day for sites I like :) (I think of it like a donation ;))

Troll king, where are you from??? Ads can only be localized by country, from what I know (being a webmaster myself).

And most sites don't localize ads, 99% don't, I can assure you that.

More or less, free sites likes this aren't making a whole lot of money off of banners, so clicking on them a couple of times just for fun isn't doing anything. This sites must be paying a heck of a lot of money in bandwidth, so next time you click on a banner ad, try purchasing something as well. And don't be annoyed by pop ups, because the day pop ups are gone, so will a lot of free sites.

Just to make you think :)

think of the increase in site quality if pop-ups dissapeared.

There'd be more and more people investing more time in their websites because they are paying for them, therefor increasing the quantity and quality of content and presentation.

I dont think they are localized, although that probably would help out profits, if people actually looked at them, instead of closing them immediately. I get a pop up ad for an ISP, that I have never heard of.
