Well, for one thing, it has already been ruled out that there will be a collusion in 2019...

and no, I wasn't scared, nor am I afraid of other asteriod collusions. I'm just an ignorant fool :) .

theres a 1 in 333 chance theres no garuntee, tho i hope it hits i dought it will. it would be so cool if it did. even tho it coukld cause destrction. it would proablly land in a ocean cause a lto fo earth is water. maybe in ht emiddle of the pacific and ti wont damaga land.

And maybe if the rest of us are lucky enough, it'll smack you in the fricking head and rattle your brain enough to allow you to actually make sense when you type.

so it wasn't just me who was thinking that...
in the interest of keeping to the topic: chances in a collision are one in 200,000. painting the asteroid white itself would cause the sun to push on it harder and out of harms way.

Even if it is going to hit.... I don't think that my fear would have anything to do with it. I really cannot do anything? IMHO, people living in this planet really cannot do anything with it if it were really to hit Earth...

Don't you all think so? Pointless to discuss about scared or not...

If that thing was going to hit earth, the US alone could get about 4000 nukes up their that are 150 times more powerful than the ones dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Also, since it would be in space where there naturally is radiation(i think), they could even use a hydrogen bomb or two.

Basically, if that thing comes remotely close to hitting us, it will be blown into dust.

It wasn't just you thinking that I couldn't get passed the 8th or 9th 'word' And am I correct in thinking that you are volunteering to paint it white for us? Good on you, if you need some help I can suggest some people to take with you ;)

http://www.zetatalk.com/thub.htm - this really made me laugh, 9 months to go and life as we know it could all be over. Its just that all those telescopes aimed at the sky have missed this magnetic giant so far.

First off, a hydrogen bomb is an atomic bomb, and second, i wouldn't be so confident, the momentum of one these doomsday type asteriods is trully gargantuan, simply hurling bombs at it is not neccesarily a great idea. The best bet would probably be to attempt to divert its course, i'm far from certain we would be able to do it though.... perhaps, human ingenuity cannot be underestemated, lets hope we don't ever have to find out. (though it seems governments are taking more seriously the threat of asteroid collisions and research being done into methods of aversion.)

Starting in 1997 the earth's warming trend, steming from her core, will be noticed and is a general topic of conversation. This is when you should prepare for self sufficiency in a safe location. See, THIS is what we should be talking about! :D

Starting in 2000, three years prior to the cataclysms, a period of crop shortages will be so severe that alternative food production needs to be begun and practiced in earnest. This is when you should become practiced at self sufficiency.Ahhhh! How long is it until the year of 2000?

golfinguy4

I know that Clyde. I was trying to say that the hydrogen bomb emits more radiation than some other nukes, but wouldn't matter in space. (This is what I have heard and might be wrong)

ok, what have we got?

Im with the guy who says the big rock should land on the head of this thread starter.

blowing up nukes is a load of bollox..we need to deflect something that BIG, not blow it to s@*t.

Painting it white is ...good...bit like cricketers shining the ball on their pants so it SWINGS away or in..guess we would only have to paint half the asteroid huh?

.....or we could roughen the other side like some people have been known to..lol

If it hits, we are goosed, if it misses we are ok.

Maybe a big net could be suspended above......................

I guess the film ARMAGEDDON could be like a kinda TRAINING video for NASA?

Yeah, until the tidal waves came in. Something that big going that fast makes neat ripples in the water...

I haven't heard that painting it white thing before, but it (kinda) makes sense... Interesting.

for a person preaching common sense, i am suprised by this post. what sense does it make to take "more seriously the threat of asteroid collisions"? chances are it will never happen.
//edit: never meaning in a very long time, like a couple million years

the idea is that a white coating allows the sun's radiation to bounce off more often, pushing it harder away from the sun. any course change, even tiny like the sun's radiation in outer space on an object asteroid sized over the period of twenty years, would offset its course enough to miss the planet entirely.

we still have 17 years left(or is it 16) and we are all talking about this metal rock THING, hitting the earth. It wouldn't be THAT bad, look on the bright side, i mean a few of us earthlings may become something like superman or something! Yeah!
there's a bad thing though, Well i always wanted to see the hailey's comet, but if that bastard rock hits, i'll never get to see it! maybe we should have earth move to a new orbit, or mak the moon change it's so it would come in the way of the astroids and block it!
i don't think the nuclear bonbing is a good idea because it would only break it up in pieces and then instead of one big astroid, we're gonna have a million smaller once.

And maybe it would help your spelling. I'm not sure how yet, but it might.

Nuking it could concievable alter its path enough to miss earth. We would have to do something like they tried to do on Deep Impact, land on it, place a lot of nukes on the surface and detonate them so that the explosions would push the asteroid perpendicular to its path and cause it to miss the earth.

The possibility of a doomsday asteroid is enough of a reason to continue research on nuclear weapons since the bigger the explosion, the more the asteroid will be pushed

I'm with you two on this one.

And the point of debating the VERY slim chance of a cataclysm in 17 years time is what?

Let the physicists etc worry about stuff like that. If a cataclysm is gonna happen at any time, well then it's gonna happen. Maybe human ingenuity will save us, maybe it won't. If not we all die together in the biggest fireworks display ever!! However in the mean time just enjoy life cos we are all gonna die sometime!!

i can see it now...

France: what are you up to now, you filthy americans?
Bush (speaking for america): we're bilding newkewlar whippons!
Russia: why? we thought you gave up that game a long time ago
Bush: there're for... asteroid detonation.
Russia: then why are they aimed at us?
Bush: because we think the asteroid's gonna land there, and when it does, we're gonna blast it to kingdom come!
Russia: but the asteroid's gonna ruin all of earth!
France: why are you risking nuclear war?
Bush: cause I did the math myself!

thanks for the links guys, first time I laughed all day!

sounds like some crappy storyline for a RPG. "The ANCIENTS knew about a monster planet that will mess up earth's tilts, etc"

Okay if this planet is so close to hitting us (9 months) why haven't we even seen it? What is it going to do, suddenly appear, bump earth then disappear? Things only do that in crappily animated computer games.

Y2K was the funnest time period EVER. I went around and scared people on purpose just to watch them get all scared and junk. My mom and dad filled our bathtub with water so we can drink if the power goes out and we can't get any from our well. lol!

The ONLY way blowing up an asteroid will work is if we make it split in small enough pieces to where they would burn up in the atmosphere. The most damage that will be caused then is maybe roofs being damaged by the larger sized meteorites that don't burn up completely, or maybe if some idiot get clunked in the head by one. I say redirect the motherf****er!

And I would love to see it hit earth. Why? Beats me. I would just like to see it happen. Everytime something like this comes up, I cross my fingers it'll happen.
