OK, iain's thread inspired me to create another stupid poll.

What's the best board game out there? Extra points if it has some application in programming

Trivial pursuit

08-16-2001, 11:22 AM
why chess of course!!!

backgammon and trivial pursuit in 2nd and 3rd.

08-16-2001, 11:30 AM
Oh yeah, mine are Trivial Pursuit, Risk, and chess (in no particular order)

Doh - didnt think of chess. Though I am better at TP - I'm a lousy chess player. Would love to be better at it though

Axis and Allies.

It has been made a computer game, too, though
I never played that one. No computer can be as
much fun as a group of friends.

( If you don't know it, check it out, it's like riskČ )

Axis and Allies. I love that game. I think I was in
elementary school the first time I played it. I played a
game of it earlier this year that lasted more than 7

Anyway, besides Axis and Allies, I'd say Mouse Trap. Very
creative game.

Yes- Mouse trap. Very nice.

Operation-- very risky, good feedback.

Sorry- such a sweet irony.

Cop-it- Good dorm game, less rules- more fun.

Candy Land- If only it were real.

Shoots and Ladders- I'm too afraid of heights to play myself but it's fun to watch others.

Life- My first car- I'll never forget my wife and 3 kids.

>>Ebola Monkey Hunt

Never heard of this... sounds good though

Ebola monkey hunty is made by a company called cheapass games.

They come in envelopes, and come with the board on card in pieces and any cards you need for the game and then expect you to supply anything else like counters, "pieces" and dice since all th little fiddly plastic bits and dice and everything else are:
1) Expensive (in terms of total product cost)
2) You already have loads of these from other board games.

In ebola monkey hunt you play members of a research/crisis control team who has to retreive ebola ridden monkeys accidentily let out in an office. Whoever wins gets a hefty research grant, hence the use of you tranquiliser guns on other players rather than monkeys.

Killing Dr Lucky is effectively Cluedo in reverse where you're all trying to murder everyone and is also a cheapass game

and Orcs at the Gate is based on the knights of the dinner table comics

Kinda like that naff film with Dustin Hoffman (walking loaf of bread) & Rene Russo.......Outbreak - yeah

Yeah, but you get to shoot all your friends, knock them out and puncture their bio hazard suits so they have to run screaming fo the cool zone in order not to die.

It also features the card kicking it John Woo style, which allows you to ignore all limitations such as rate of fire and actual amounts of ammo you're still carrying

I do its called fool's mate here. Its like five moves but it is easily prevented.

08-16-2001, 07:20 PM
Actually, I know of two that are shorter. If you're black and white moves just right, you can mate in 2 moves. Also, the fool's mate I've heard of is 4 moves.

08-16-2001, 07:23 PM
yea you're right its four not five moves....

hows the 2move done....

do it in shorthand while i find my chessboard lol!

08-16-2001, 07:34 PM
You'll have to forgive me (I don't know chess shorthand)

King's bishop's pawn moves forward 2 spaces
King's pawn moves
King's knight's pawn moves forward 2 spaces
Move queen diagonally to edge of board

08-16-2001, 07:39 PM
well I learn something new everytime i come here.....

but that would never happen against anyone half decent (probably why i've never seen it before).

08-16-2001, 07:53 PM
Yeah, but it can still be done :)

08-17-2001, 12:13 PM
I can't believe I forgot about shot glass chess, classic board game

08-17-2001, 12:15 PM
Heh, one of my friends at school got shotglass checkers (that way you don't have to think as hard :))

How about favorite drinking games, while we're on the subject?

08-17-2001, 12:29 PM
for drinking games spoof takes some beating.

everyone at the table has 3 coins. you all put your hands behind your back and fiddle with your coins. Then put one hand out in front of you closed containing 0,1,2 or 3 coins. The idea of the game is to guess how many coins there are around the table. If you call it right then you are out.First person out calls up a shot of whatever he wants.Last person left drinks it and pays for it. Very fun way of getting ........ed.
