Rob,
Thanks, good point. I don't know if this rings a bell, but about a year ago I think I saw one of your book reviews on the web, and emailed you about C. I think you recommended the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler to me, and said it could be used in a fairly basic manner, for a new person. If my memory is correct, this shows that it's a small world.

Er.....I dont know if that was me....the only review I think I ever wrote was for Govtcheez's short lived "review site"....(and I think I was the only one who wrote a review that :D )....ah and I guess a few for Flashdaddee.....

Could have been....maybe?

Rob,
Sorry. I checked the email and found that I had confused you with an r-hayden in the UK.

Incidently, someone was looking for an uncompiler. If he searched for a C decompiler, there are a few out there.

>>how do you become a moderator ??

Some people will tell you it involves ritual sacrifice.... they'd be right.

>>what qualities do you need etc ??

Omnipotence helps.

>>are they paid ??

A six digit salery paid to our accounts in Sweden.

>>just wondering, no particular reason i'm asking

Seriouslt tho; We were voted for a long time ago in the land before this board. A few new mods were voted in when the board was changed. Nobody gets paid. ... Although you're welcome to petition to the webmaster for that. I guarantee support. :)

You have to sacrifice a fellow boardmember first. Those dark rituals work best with Steveys ;)

>what qualities do you need etc ??

You need to have a thick skin, be patient, and be aware that you are probably dealing with a kid on the other end, because an adult wouldn't behave this way.

>are they paid ??

The webmaster gives me an insane amount of money each month to share with the others... but don't tell them, they still think it's a volunteer job

;) you shouldn't be mean to stevey, i know him quite well, (actually extremely well ;)).....
and can assure you that he is one of the most intelligent, erudite, witty, charming, personable guys ive ever had the pleasure to meet !!
he is without doubt a star among men, and ladies...he's pretty easy on the eye too ! possibly a little too good-looking and handsome for his own good, it does tend to make other men jealous, and women a little intimidated and afraid to approach him. i am in fact considering turning gay just to be closer to him !!

i agree with unregistered (#1)

except that i am a lady, and i found him a little on the 'large' size for me, which has kind of ruined me for other guys !!!

Let me just say that the previous 'unregistered' was not me. No way would I describe my incandescent awesomeness as i'm far too humble to inflict lesser men with such jealousy.

May I add that if required, I would happily permit myself to be sacrificed to further the cause of all moderators because of my humungous ego - er - sorry, I mean altruism; it would, after all be the best English thing to do and would confirm my benign nobility to all my wonderful fans.

In fact I insist - sacrifice me NOW! I insist.

Oh yeah, absolutely - I'm far too potent to be sold by your average corner dealer.

> Speaking of which, where is the cheeze these days? Brian too?

I'm around, a little. At school right now. If anyone feels the urge to come by with some beer, I'd appreciate it - I'm out right now.

I may be wrong about the C decompiler. There seems to be a common tool called the EXE-2-C decompiler, but it's listed as a hex editor. Someone on another forum compares a C decompiler to making a cow out of hamburger. Another comment is:
Decompiling exe files back to the original source code is impossible. This is not a technical
limitation but a basic fact about the compilation process. The compilation process removes all
information about comments, whitespace, preprocessor macros, identifier (variable, function and
type) names, and such things, and only leaves the basic function calling and information passing
skeleton. There are decompilers that decompile exe files to *some* C source code, but that source
code will most probably be so illegible it won't be of any practical use beyond recompiling on
another platform to try to achieve a modicum of portability.

>>There seems to be a common tool called the EXE-2-C decompiler

I listed two links on the first page of this thread to decompilers. Be prepared for a let down if you were holding high expectations of nice little C programs built from an executable...
