What's the best role playing game out there? Pen/Paper, console, PC - doesn't matter...

Anyone?

I go with Fallout 2 or GURPS Cyberpunk...

Fallout 2, hands down.

Classic favorite: DragonFlight on Atari ST.
Took me two months and two dozen hand drawn maps to find all the secrets.

PC Favorite: Fallout series. Just great ! Give me the the auto-shotgun and I'll blast them all ;)

Pen and Paper varies with my mood. When I'm down, I like to play Vampire (VtM). Dark, gothic, backstabbing, bloody, loveless... perfect.

If I'm happy, I'd like to play Novadis ( Desert nomad riders ) or Dwarves in a pen and paper game called DSA here. It's pretty famous in German speaking countries and I've heard it will be translated for US marketing. It's in it's fourth edition right now, and has probably been around since D&D came out.
I like Star Wars, but the system simply sucks. It's been 13 hours now since my dwarf slew the last greenskin ;) We've been playing yesterday night... *yaaaawn*

I'm not playing Arcanum that much right now (not enough time plus Fallout 2 caught my eye again... I "loaned" a couple copies to my friends - they love it.)

BG was too slow for me, and BG2 seemed kinda weird to play if you hadn't completed the first one. (Like - I started playing it, and looked at Imoen, and all of a sudden she's a Mage/Thief or something? When the hell did that happen?)

The open-endedness of Fallout 2 is what's gotten me. I love how you can do just about anything. One of my favorite things to do is walk into the first town and just blow away the first gun dealer I can find. Sure, you gotta dispatch his little junkie buddies, but who cares? You got all his stuff! And if you think that's being a cheap little kiddie, I dare you to try that in NCR... I also like how it's actually a semi-adult game - profanity and sexual material is flung around just like I'd believe it would be in a post-apocalyptic, lawless wasteland...

Dragon Warrior!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (for original Nintendo)

what about one of the Final Fantacy series? (SNES) I liked FF5 the best. Also the FF fo other platforms...

I've never really thought most console RPGs were really RPGs. Too linear. Take Ocarina of Time, for example. Nothing you do in that game (besides dying) really affects the way the game plays out. I can't just walk up and and beat the hell out of Zelda, because the game won't let me. Just because a game's in a fantasy setting doesn't necessarily make it an RPG. It's like people calling Diablo an RPG. That's no more an RPG than Gauntlet.

RPG... ugh... unless you consider Hitman an RPG... then i'm out.. I just can't get into them.

I'm still waiting for the perfect RPG... Actually I'm working on it. ;)

Dragon Warrior (all of them... for Nintendo) were really good for their time. FF1 and 2 as well. In terms of what I've played for the longest period of time those three take the cake. Diablo II sucked me in for a crazy period of time most recently but i hesitate to call it an RPG, really...

Look for the release of 'Erokin' in a couple years. It'll answer all your RPG prayers. :D

Ocarina of Time wasn't an RPG. I don't even
know how people came to call it that. With the
exception of gaining hearts, there's no character
attribute-raising (which I consider to be the
main 'ingredient' in an RPG). It was still a very,
very good game, though.

Linearality (pleh, I doubt that's even a word)
doen't really factor into my definition of an RPG.
To me, an RPG should have a great story and
character-building. There are some RPGs that
are extremely linear, like Final Fantasy X. This
game is pretty boring, but I continued to play
it because the story is fantastic.

I always thought Computer RPGs were very lame.
They are all set in the same 'world' (dragons,
ogres, elves, wizards, whatever). You can tell
that they are all American made and that the
developers were all D&D Geeks in High School,
just by the visuals.

I love console RPGs, though. Xenogears being my
favorite.

Yeah, that's important, too. But, being a D&D geek (and damn proud of it! Me and my Druid Moraxes! Oh yeah!), I really enjoy the freeform style in pen/paper RPGs that doesn't translate very well or frequently to a PC or console. If you wanted to do something that was within the bounds of your character, and the DM wasn't a total chode, you could do it. If you're sick of the fantasy settings, ethic, try Fallout - you can get 1 & 2 direct from Interplay for $10 as a bundle...

The Ultima series wins hands down. Until they ****ed it up with that new one, can't remember what it is called.

Well, shorthand I can think of:

"Chrono Trigger" for the SNES, "Dragon Warrior IV" for the NES, "Shining Force" for the Genesis, "Skies of Arcadia" for the Dreamcast," Adventure" for the Atari 2600, "The Count" for the Amiga Vic-20, "Munchkin" (a card game), "The Dig" for the PC, and "Seiken Densetsu IV" for the Playstation,

Hehe - I read about that in "The Munchkin's Guide to Power Gaming"... Sounds great :D

Skies of Arcadia rules. It's probably my 2nd
favorite RPG. I love it! It's so cheerful, and
the whole exploration-concept is great.

Anyone remember Daggerfall? That rocked...

except for the bug where you fell through the floor.

> Anyone remember Daggerfall? That rocked...

That was one of the Elder Scrolls games, wasn't it (like Arena)?

I never got to play those, but they looked sweet... I can't wait for the new one (Battlespire, isn't it?)

basilisk
03-12-2002, 02:49 PM
new one is called Morrowind (yep i liked playing daggerfall too)

Govtcheez

> new one is called Morrowind (yep i liked playing daggerfall too)

So Battlepsire was the third one?

basilisk
03-12-2002, 03:17 PM
now this is where it gets confusing - nope Battlespire was not counted as Elder Scrolls 3 - it was set in the elder scrolls universe but Morrowind is the true sequel to Daggerfall and is therefore called ElderScrolls 3 ...
from the elderscrolls site:

Morrowind is the third chapter in the Elder Scrolls series and the sequel to Daggerfall. Redguard and Battlespire were set in the Elder Scrolls universe, and play a part in the overall history of the Elder Scrolls, but neither was a true role-playing game in the Elder Scrolls tradition.

Blast i really must get out more

Brian

Battlespire sucks. Daggerfall is a classic.

Out of all the Final Fantasy's...I must say that Final Fantasy 3 (America) / Final Fantasy 6 (Japan) was the best....it was awesome....(for SNES)

Brian

Final Fantasy is not a roleplaying game. It is faker.

Final Fantasy is manufactured Japanese horse crap. [Same with anime]

Thank god, someone agrees with me...

Go buy a book and read them - look for D&D, Vampire: the Masquerade, GURPS, or maybe Legend of the Five Rings.

the best game ever i tell you!

Then what would you call it? I think it is definitely a role playing game. You gain levels, spells, etc. Every aspect of the game is role playing. It is definitely not a strategy game. A strategy game is like Legend of Zelda.

It is not an action game. An action game would be like Metroid. It is not a sim. A sim (aka FPS) would be like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Flight Simulator, etc.

So what would you call it? I think it falls 100% under the role playing game category.

Sorry, I'm gonna stick to my guns - they're not open-ended enough, by my definition... Definitely more of an RPG than Zelda... I'd call them adventure games (same place I'd put Gabriel Knight)

Fallout 2, Final Fantasy 3(usa)/6(jap), chronotrigger. Those are the best rpgs ever.
Zelda is a great game, but its an adventure game not a rpg.
