Alright, I'm claiming the right to be the first person to post a brainteaser on here! Neither of them are terribly difficult, but here they are anyways:

1)How quickly can you find out what is unusual about this paragraph? It looks so ordinary that you would think that nothing was wrong with it at all and, in fact, nothing is. But it is unusual. Why? If you study it and think about it you may find out, but I am not going to assist you in any way. You must do it without coaching. No doubt, if you work at it for long, it will dawn on you. Who knows? Go to work and try your skill. Par is about half an hour.

2)I'm in a rock, not in a stone
I'm in marrow, not in bone
I'm in a bolster, not in a bed
I'm not living , I'm not dead

1) Doesn't contain the most frequently used letter in the alphabet - 'e' ?????????

2) Don't know

Govtcheez
08-13-2001, 01:37 PM
1) Correct.

2) Keep trying

Hint: To solve #2, think along the same lines as #1

Govtcheez

To keep the number at 2, here's another one:

You have two hourglasses--a 4-minute glass and a 7-minute glass. You want to measure 9 minutes. How do you do it?

spliff
08-13-2001, 02:03 PM
why use an hour glass in this day & age, just go get yourself a stopwatch
hehehehehe

zen
08-13-2001, 02:20 PM
1) letter 'r'

2) Start 7 minute and 4 minute together. Turn 4 minute over as soon as it's finished. When 7 minute finishes time starts(4 mintue has 1 minute left to run). Turn 4 minute over twice more - time stops.

There is a room with one lamp hanging from the ceiling and a chair. Outside the room there are 3 switches. Only one switch turns on the lamp.

At the begining all the switches are off and you're allowed to go into the room only once. So, how do you know which switch lights the lamp?

Stoned_Coder
08-14-2001, 06:53 AM
switch them all on lol.... you will be sure you got the right one. Doesn't say you are only allowed to flick one switch.

Stoned_Coder

ok heres a new one.

A man walks up to a farmhouse and asks the farmer for a glass of water. The farmer goes into his house and comes out with a shotgun which he points at the man. The man walks away satisfied. Why??

Here's a riddle - guess what the answer is:

This thing all things devours;
Birds, beasts, trees and flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town
And beat high mountain down.

If you switch all on how do you know which one is the right one? You haven't answer the question, I'm afraid.

Perhaps I didn't phrase it properly earlier. I resume the options.

- The three switches start in the off position.

- You cannot see if the lamp is on or off unless you walk into the room.

- You are allowed to walk into the room only once.

- You can switch on/off the switches as many times as you like.

- You have to find what switch is the right one.

Yep time was the answer :)

How about this one:

A box without hinges, key, or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.

Well, there's the blatantly sexual answer that would prolly just get people mad at me, so we won't go there :)

How about the mind?

for stealth....

how about ...... EGG

I am a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkein lol

mithrandir
08-14-2001, 07:40 AM
Yep that's right - egg is the answer.

"Riddles in the Dark" Chapter 5 from the Hobbit was the source of my posted riddles. Always good fun to read.

I've heard sales of the series have gone through the roof with FOTR looming on the horizon

The Sphinx? 42?

The Sphinx it is. Methinks my riddles could yet be more challenging.

Govtcheez

Oh yeah - zen, I guess that would work, but it's not the answer I was looking for... Time should start as soon as one of the hourglasses is flipped.

Oh man - I'm drooling over the chance to see the first film.

I read the trilogy in uni as well as the hobbit. I tried Simarrillion (Is that the correct title?) but gave up after a few chapters - didnt enjoy it.

turn on the first switch, after a while turn it off.
then turn on the second switch and enter room
if there is light it is the second switch
if there is not light and the lamp is warm it is the first switch
if there is not light and the lamp is cold it is the third switch

i do not know the word in english...it is hicup..something like
that, you have to be scared or drink water to get over it!

It's something like that, anyways. I've also seen the History of the Ring in Barnes and Noble, written by Tolkien's son - that any good?

>>I've also seen the History of the Ring in Barnes and Noble, written by Tolkien's son - that any good?

Dont know - never looked at it. The fact that it was written by his son would instantly put me off it - more so than if it was written by anyone else. (maybe being a little too pessimistic...Judge a book by its cover......)

The only good father & son author team that comes to my mind is Kingsley & Martin Amis.

You can't change the rules as you go along. As far as I'm concerned my answer was correct according to the question :).

Govtcheez
08-14-2001, 12:53 PM
OK, if you're gonna do it like that, fine. You're right. However, I didn't think I was changing the rules - just clarifying. If you just used what I set out to begin with, then spliff woulda been right when he said to use a stopwatch.

zen
08-14-2001, 01:02 PM
Yeah, that's true because you never actually stated you had to use the hourglasses.

Govtcheez
08-14-2001, 01:06 PM
Alright - you have to use the the hourglasses AND ONLY the hourglasses. Timing starts when one of the hourglasses is flipped. You can't jsut guess and say "It looks about halfway done". You can't use other loopholes; it's purely a math thing...

Zen, you were on the righ track...

Stoned_Coder
08-14-2001, 03:46 PM
ok lets try another.....

A man lives alone for three weeks then finally runs out of food so he decides to go shopping. On his way out he turns off the tv and the lights. When he gets back he finds he is responsible for 150 deaths. How is he responsible??

ehsiq

to Govtcheez

you flip both hourglasses.
1) after the 4 min. is over you turn it upside down.
2) after 3 min. you have 1 minute left in the 4 min. hourglass and the 7 min. hourglass is empty.
3) then you turn the 7 min. hourglass and
4) when the 4 min. hourglass
is empty you turn the 7 min. hourglass again.
5) after it is empty, you have 9 minutes

to Stoned_Coder

well..difficult...
are you sure that the tv was really a tv and the lights was
really the lights?

Stoned_Coder
08-14-2001, 08:43 PM
yes the tv is a tv and the lights are lights lol

think laterrally its not that hard you just have to be on the right wavelength.

Che: I know you've explained your sig before, but I'd
like a clarification. It looks to me like it says
something like "Once is good, but two times
is better." Am I right?
I ask you this in all seriousness, because
I always like to tell my lovers, "The first one
is for me; the second one's for you."
Are we thinking alike, here?

ps. Don't ask me when the last time was.

He was living in a light house. When all the lights went out a ship ran aground.
