I just got home from a Maya convention that Alias Wavefront held here in Houston. It was awesome. It's amazing what that program can do...

It's also amazing what that guy who was running it could do...he did more than I have in months in just 30 seconds...dang experienced guy...

What is maya? Is it like 3ds or is it a CAD program?

I think the movie 'Shrek' was made in it.

Shriek had its own programs made for it maya made toy story 1 and 2 and movies like that it is a very advanced 3d creation program I don't know much about it but my brother is real into that stuff and last time I talked to him he said it was better then 3d studio max

PDI who created Shrek mainly used their own proprietary software for the movie - however Maya was used for dynamic cloth animation and for the hair of Fiona and Farquaad. (A small amount of SoftImage was used as well). Maya was used heavily in Pixar's Monsters Inc in conjunction with Pixar's plug-in, Renderman. Maya was also used to model the Whos in The Grinch (sleigh ride scenes etc were done in Houdini).

Maya is miles better than 3ds max (which is mainly used for games now) - it absolutely beats every one with regards to dynamics and brush based tools and Maya cloth and Fur lead the field. (lightwave do use a fur plug in now but it does not have the fluidity of maya and is infact a cut down version of Sasquatch's full fur and hair app)

Maya DID NOT make Toy Story 1 and 2. Renderman did. I read an article about that. Maya did do parts of Shrek, and it did Lord of the Rings, and Final Fantasy, along with several others.

Renderman is a very heavy rendering tool - however the way you use the renderer itself is by programming it in C/C++ therefore because of this it is then used in conjunction with 3d modelling tools such as maya for ease of use. Therefore Toy Story etc was done with Maya and Renderman - basically the modelling is done in maya and a plug in is used from maya to the renderman renderer and Maya is given the extra functionality of Renderman.

This is a quote from SIGGRAPH 2001, the computer graphics and animation industry's premiere conference which explains the link between renderman and maya

their RM-1 hardware solution for rendering computer graphics and animations has become RenderMan. Used in conjunction with Maya (http://www.aliaswavefront.com), the now software-based product is used by Pixar themselves on all their films including their "Toy Story" films and the upcoming "Monsters, Inc.", and by Industrial Light & Magic for many popular films.
