We may not always like it, we know there must be something better, but it still reigns supreme. And it is 40 today.

Fascinating. I wonder what other peripherals I should put on my calendar. I bought my mouse a mousepad to celebrate the occassion.

Happy birthday to the computer mouse - the keyboard must be getting on now a bit too in years. ;)

the keyboard is over a century old, the QWERTY layout was introduced sometime in the 1870s (and it wasn't the first attempt at creating a typewriter keyboard)...

The QWERTY keyboard layout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY) was designed for inefficiency. Also, the designer put all the required letters to write "typewriter" along the first row, for the convience of his salesmen.

Happy 134th year, keyboard . . . :)

it was designed to prevent the struts of a typewriter keyboard from getting tangled up when typing multiple letters simultaneously.
This had the effect of slowing down typists, which was beneficial in preventing such tangles.

Keyboards are clearly better than the 2-3 button mice. Things could be done a lot faster if the programs support keyboard-lovers more. Like having a shortcut to sumbit this reply with a button. Death to the mice!

well said. Death to rodents!
Of course you can submit posts by pressing tab, then space.
But try finding the edit button and it's tabbing through hundreds of links...
