View Full Version : Can mods do this?

Hi all,

- If I post and just after seeing it I delete it, will mods be able to see it later?
- Similarly, if I post something and edit it, will mods see the original post?
- If I change my online status to be hidden, can mods still see me?
- Do mods know my email, even if I chose not to display it to any body?

- If I change my email address, will some notifications be sent to old email, which I need to confirm, or something like that?

Seeing as I have some experience with moderating a vBulletin board, I can answer some of these.

- If I post and just after seeing it I delete it, will mods be able to see it later?
Yes. And they can undelete it, too.

- Similarly, if I post something and edit it, will mods see the original post?
Not without some sort of hack to my knowledge.

- Do mods know my email, even if I chose not to display it to any body?
Yes, they may. If they have access to a moderator control panel, they can see all your profile information, as well as modify it.

- If I change my email address, will some notifications be sent to old email, which I need to confirm, or something like that?
Oftentimes, a new one is generated and sent to your new email so you can verify it.

vBulletin is a very mysterious thing. I've heard all forums have a hidden board (like Area 51 on daniweb but its hidden) which normal users can't see. Moderators and admins use it for....i don't know what. Probably to decide who's gonna be banned next

After your behavior? Unlikely.
Asking to become a moderator is also a big no-no. If they need one, they can pick one.

Most boards have some forum of Staff forum that's hidden to non-staff.

Most boards have some forum of Staff forum that's hidden to non-staff.

You can have groups within the users, and have forums that are hidden to all but those groups, or that can only be posted in my certain members - it's even adjustable on the level of replying to exisitng vs. creating new threads.

On another forum, where I am a moderator, there is a "Moderators lounge" - it's very low traffic area, but occasionally we discuss the errant behaviour of users, or other moderator-specific subjects - along with some "moderator only" friendly chat.

On that same forum, there are a couple of other "restricted use" forums - some which allow anyone to read, but only some to write, and some that are secret, but not directly bound to whether the member is a moderator or not.

This is all part of phpBB/vBulletin and any other related forum software.

It is up to the forum owner to set up who has the right to do what in which forum.

Yes, I'm familiar with the choices that are available.
It's certainly possible to lock forums to only some people (often groups), to certain post levels, etc.
This could be further customized by board hacks.

That brings me back to the OT group (http://cboard.cprogramming.com/showgroups.php), I still don't know what it is :(

And my thread about it a while ago didn't help -- everyone thought it was a laughing matter!

You should know what it is. I sent you a PM with an explanation.

>- If I post and just after seeing it I delete it, will mods be able to see it later?
Yes.

No, the most we can see is that the post was edited. There's no versioning involved except in the case of reported posts, where the post as it was reported is saved as a quote.

>- If I change my online status to be hidden, can mods still see me?
Yes.

>- Do mods know my email, even if I chose not to display it to any body?
Yes, we have read access to all of the public, private, and internal information for your account.

OMG can they read my PMs too?

Elysia

Not without any hacks, no.
I once installed a hack for phpbb that allowed reading PMs for admins, so to say it's impossible is a lie, but vbulletin by default does not have such a feature. Don't worry.

So, what naughty things have you been saying in your PMs?

We know what you did with that hamster abh!shek.

We don't have access to PMs besides our own. I don't know for sure but I'd be surprised if VB has any default feature that allows even admins to view other's PMs. Of course if you have access to the database you don't need the forum in order to view them.

We can only change the signature, profile picture, and avatar. We can see the rest of the profile information but can't change it.

Yes, now that you mention I see how to compare versions. Mostly pointless though, unless one is investigating some claim of abuse.

I don't see it >_<
Unless it was introduced with 2.6.9 or up, since the board I use for reference is only 2.68.
I see no compare versions alternative in post moderation.

I don't like it... now I can't sneak insulting and evil edits in between normal posts so that I may secretly feel better about myself without actually confronting anyone.

Mods can pin-point your exact location at any given time using your IP. (They also know what color your underwear is)

But don't worry, only the sys-ops have the code for the ballistic missile silo, so we're relatively safe.

Oh... errr... to all mods, I only used women's underwear that once!

I would see no benefit in being able to view PMs not to mention it brings up a bit of a privacy issue. Also don't see much use for the versioned posts but nice to know about it.

For the morbidly curious the usual "conversation" with manav is shockingly normal, he's just a little different. He likes to talk about Bollywood, (http://www.bollywoodworld.com/whatisbollywood/)from what I can gather.
