I am looking for a good fiction book on computers, like computer programmers or something. Do you know a good one I could read?

Snow Crash!!!!!!! by neil stephenson

It is about a computer hacker guy in the future that goes into this avatar world in the computer where he is a master swordsman. He finds out that there is a new computer virus called 'Snow Crash' that not only infects the visual computers of others, but also kills the person.

It was really exciting.

I read it a long time ago... so I do not remember much... but it sticks in my mind as a great book.

Tom Clancy's Net Force series is great. It is set in the year 2010, and the Internet is huge. A special task force called Net Force is created to stop virutal terrorist threats and the like. I just bought the first book today, and haven't been able to put it down! It's very readable much moreso than his military fiction books (which are good, if not a tad wordy).

The Soul of a New Machine

Really, this book is about processor development, and the computer industry (20 years ago), but it's very well done, it's true, and as someone who works with computers, you'll probably be better for knowing what goes into them.

Have to agree with Jock on Ian M. Banks. Look out for his 'culture' novels - my personal favourite is 'Excession'. Feersum Endjinn is also very good.

Microserfs is quite good.
I forget who its by, but its about a bunch of programmers and debuggers who quit from MS to go work for themselves.

The Heritic by Jason K. Chapman great book, plus you can read it for free online at http://www.happyhacker.org/cgi-bin/pageview.pl

Heres a little blurb about it: "When computer records are trusted more than our own memories, more than our own senses, whoever controls the computers controls reality. The Heretic is a new kind of story, blending high-speed action with the fantasy elements of virtual reality. In the shadows of the net, a battle rages among powerful programmers whom novices see as no less than wizards. The prize: control of the very fabric of reality."
