Thread: Back from Vista

It feels sooooooo good to be back in XP. OEM XP as it comes out of the box is far better than Vista with all the updates. No joke. Vista was sooooooooo slow, annoying (even with UAC turned off), and every one of my games ran at least 10% to 15% slower even with 2GB of RAM.

I tried and tried to get Vista to play nice by shutting off all the new 'features' advertised by Microsoft. Truth is they are not features at all but they are resource hogs. It took 1 hour and 40 min to unzip a 10mb file using Windows native unzip and using the actual Winzip program. Disk indexing was the cause and it is slower than crap. Who cares if you can use the super uber Microsoft search (like anyone uses it)? I don't want something I use maybe 1% of the time to slow my computer down 99% of the time I'm not using it.

I've been buying OS's from MS since DOS 2.10 way back in 1980 and Vista is by far the worst OS they have produced. I have no idea how they shipped it or got it through QA. Do not get me wrong Aero is done very nicely and the GUI is top notch. But underneath all that pretty eye candy is a very unstable, untested, unorganized, unsupported (even a year after release most the drivers for it suck), disaster of an operating system.

I cannot use Vista now since I have 3gb of RAM and I'm still on an AGP rig. the NVidia nv_agp.sys driver does not support more than 2gb of RAM and will blue screen the second it loads. No fixes and NVidia is not making any more drivers for my rig. So I either upgrade or use XP.

In short, Vista is a nightmare and I cannot recommend it to anyone. Too bad Best Buy won't refund my 240 bucks for the thing.

The straight answer is no, he means upgrade his hardware to PCIe or something.

In all fairness: disk indexing runs once and when it's done it's done. If you ask me, the new search functionality is something Microsoft should've implemented a looong time ago. If you really need to use the disk immediately, just stop the indexing service for a while. Also, I haven't really noticed the disk indexing affecting processes in the forground.

Yeah, XP has an indexing service. Though I'm not sure how to use it and it's not very useful I think.
Vista has a lot of nice features, but the drivers hell and the slowness of the OS is something that just makes it not worth the money.
The good thing is that SP1 fixes a lot of these bottlenecks, so maybe we can use the OS in the future when we have to use it or be sued by Microsoft.

I am currently running Vista x64 and it is smokin' fast! Xp x86 is really kinda slow. But then again it took like 4 installs of Vista to get the drivers that agreed my new PC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't XP plagued with problems when it first came out as well? Don't get me wrong, I agree that Microsoft should do more extensive beta testing on there OS's before they release them. I'm not about to try it until they get the first service pack out.

All I know is that Vista is far from ready for release. In the future, though, who knows? Maybe it will become a worthy successor of XP, or maybe Windows 7 will be the successor with all the features Vista was supposed to have...

I think that most of Vista's problems are because of bad drivers at least this is where I had all my problems except of course trying to get used to the new gui. I wish I had a 64 bit XP to compare it with.
Bubba, just turn all the pretty stuff off if it's to slow.
Can anything be as bad as ME?

It's a shame as well, because I'm sure a lot of people want DX10 -- but can't have it because Vista sucks...
