When your PC boots and displays the HD settings is it ATA 33 or higher?

If not a 5400rpm 8Gb HD is not capable of pushing 3Mb/sec to the CDROM (IMHO).
Set the speed as low as possible (1x = 150Kb/sec) and try, if it works increase the X till it don't.
Get CD RW media as they are cheaper at 18 CD's for a copy.

Something tells me the machine just isnt' capable of using a 20x drive... i think upgrades are your best bet... i don't think it's a software problem.

thanks, someone said it may have been a problem with nero, so im gonna try adeptic easy CD creator. also, ive treid it at all the speeds, it seems to get farther if its set on a higher speed. on like speed 2x, it crashes at around 11x usually

Did you say it gets futher the higher the speed? Thats wierd, should be other way round.

Ensure you have at least a 1Gb free HD space. Get some more RAM. Should have 128Mb min these days.

Make sure the correct DMA drivers for your motherboard are installed and have been turned on in the Device manager.

well, I have about 1.7 GB free space...I want to get a new computer all together sometime, cause mine is starting to get old. Ive tried tampering with all the DMA settings, but none of them seem to make a difference. and yeah, the faster I set it, the farther it gets...although 12x seems to be about a max.
