lol... I read some short stories that he wrote, but I cannot remember them very well...
I seem to recall one that was about a computer that was created by mankind. It became really really powerful and somehow or another, mankind stopped existing (can't remember how). Then the computer got lonely and made man so the cycle could repeat.
Then there was one that a cheez movie was made from (I think the movie was called Nightfall). I read the story and saw the movie. It was about a planet that never saw darkness because at least one of their three suns was always up. Then this astronomer predicted that the third sun was going to drop (this had happened before way in the past... but everyone thought it was just silly lore). The darkness came and people went nutz and started burning everything in sight and rioting. The story was really good... too bad they made a B movie out of it.

I also have to agree with Betazep; Nightfall is my favourite Asimov-book (another one is that short story where that robot wants to become a human).

Well I shall discuss now.
The Foundation Trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) is an incredibly well written story that spans a millenia detailing the history of the Foundation - an organization foretold to save human kind from 10,000 years of barbarism and war. Asimov does an absolutely fabulous job of making the reader use his head, while creating an awesome story in a very "real" environment. Sometimes I found myself wondering "In the next 100 million years, could something like this happen?". While many characters are only around for a few dozen pages before they are dead from time, Asimov does a good job of given the characters a face and mind that the reader can imagine.
Some of his other books, namely the robot series, are not so far in the future as the Foundation series, and hit even closer to home. They make you think "Are human-like robots such a good idea?", and provide mind-numbingly good stories with little action but in some ways are very profound.
