I was walking out of my room and I kicked my small toe really really hard on the wall by accident. I put ice on it straight away, and it's not too painful at the moment, but it does hurt to move it. If it was broken how would I know?

She was so Blonde, she spent 20 minutes looking at the orange juice can because it said "Concentrate."
When in doubt, read the FAQ.
Then ask a smart question.

If it stops hurting in the next few days, apart from any anesthetic/personality enhancing type substances you may imbibe on Aust day, its not broken.
Else go to a doc who will tell you to take some asprin/codine, least thats what my Mom used tell me when I broke toes surfing. (she is a GP)

Well it's badly bruised and swollen, but I can walk around with out too much discomfort. I think I just sprained it, because I didn't hear a snap/crack when I did it. If I wake up and it's still hurting and the swelling hasn't gone down, I might have to go to the doctors.
Made a few changes that may help

don't waste your money. there's nothing they can do for it.
Whoa, whoa, whoa - that violates encapsulation!
You need
walk.setNormal(false)
Jeez....

Listen, if you really want to know if your toe is broke, check his wallet and see if he has any money left. (rimshot!)

You'll all be pleased to know that it's more or less okay now. The swelling had gone down when I woke up, I can walk without discomfort, and I can bend it fine. There's just a nice purple/black bruise for my troubles.
If the toe in question is bruised in a blackish - greenish hue is a good clue.
Lightly grasp toe in question (gently!) and gingerly move to and fro (left and right). If the allegedly broken toe does not move (at the joint or if you wanna get anatomical - metatarsal) BUT does move at portion above the bruise line (i.e. above the black and green), more than likely, its broken.
You could go to a doc, but they can't do anything about it. Now if you have insurance, they can help you very much. They'll order you a CAM walker, get you addicted to the most fabulous meds (Demoral anyone?, make mine a Demoral drip please!). But none of those are really necessary.
My Dad broke my big toe and the 2 next to it by dropping a motor on it when I was helping him move it early last year. Docs couldn't do anything, so they just sent me home w/vicadin (sp?) and told me to stay off of my feet for "a while" (talk about technical!)

Get off my Intarweb!!!!
all they do is wrap it with tape to anouther toe and give you a gloggin' shoe.
