Thread: Spare Computer

Hello again,

I have a spare MicroServer computer sitting in my house (1GHz MicroCPU) which draws bearly 80W (for the whole system). Currently I'm not using it for anything (nor it's 80GB hdd), I was wondering if anyone knew of anyways to make it help me? I don't need it for cross-compiling - already tripple-boot. And I can't afford supernet, so using it for a webserver is out of the question.

Could I perhaps set it up to help my desktop PC in someway? I don't know - CPU? Rendering? Anything!?

You could always take it apart. Get a couple other computers and you could build a small render farm. Other than that...just leave it on and run folding@home or something.

By good I mean good enough to host a server (upload wise)

To do what? I really can't see what It could do for me.

Build the most outrageously experimental linux system and hunt for bugs.

Or install some exotic system (some BSD variant, perhaps) and set it up as a Boost testing server.

Well I was thinking of using Plan9, never used it before.
Has anyone else? Is it any good?

it's hosted by linux on a p4 with 512 ram. my internetz only allows for 312kbps downloads, but other than that it's pretty good.

Hmm, well I could use it for serving a few files here and there, isn't that right justin? Is that a good SONY CD-RW drive in it? Or the Microsoft mouse :P

Source control is a good thing.

I like destroying things that I can't use but that's just me.

I think I'll just set it up for various tid-bits, resource sharing, file sharing, whatever really.

I run a five computer network at home (three Macs, three Linux, one Windows) and I find that FTP is the most reliable way to get everyone playing together from a file sharing perspective.
