    Regarding Job Possibilities as a C/C++ programmer on a Linux Platform

    Hi !!

    I am a B.Sc (Chem/Botany/Zoology) graduate. I had done a course in Linux,C,C++ and found it very interesting. What would be the job oppertunities for a Linux C C++ programmer who does not hail from a technical background possibly be ? Especially in fields like kernel programming, device driver programming or TCP/IP programming for a person with my kind of educational background ? Is being good in Maths a pre-requisite for any of these jobs ? Or would it be wiser for me to give up any hopes of getting a job in the above mentioned areas as they would be only available for engineering or Computer Science graduates ? I would be etxtremely thankful if anyone could answer my queries.

    I imagine it would be decent to good as far as possibilities go. If you wanted to go that route, find a company that utilizes linux in some sort of client package (whether it be servers, workstations, etc) and see if you can get a training internship with them. You are going to have to continue school to some extent to qualify. European/Scandinavian countries (esp Finland) wold probably have a higher need for English speaking programmers (even though almost all of them speak english anyway, due to you knowing more culture... assuming you are in America)... so if you don't mind traveling... well there you go. Schools are also free in Finland.

    The opportunities are out there for those that pursue them. Be prepared to fall on your rear a few times.

    You wouldn't make much money doing kernel programming for a Linux open source operating sytem. Also, kernel programming is the area of CS graduates, and not just your typical CS graduate. If on the other hand you learn more about C/C++/Java/C# than you will likely be able to find a niche with your scientific background writing scientific software applications. Many CS students are directed toward programming business related software applications. Math is always a good idea. The more math skills the better, algebra, statistics, calculus. All depends on the type of applications you want to write whether math plays a larger or smaller role. I imagine that a scientific background, you would have greater math skills than your average CS.

    I heard that there are good CS institutions in India.
