One potential problem with dark backgrounds is that people tend to absorb more information from light backgrounds than from dark backgrounds.

You need to get rid of the default page or else just make it a link and the message board should be the default page. You also need to get a new moderator for the C# board. Someone who will contribute C# code.

What default page are you referring to? (If you are referring to the index page, then I can assure you the message board is not going to become the homepage for the site.)

    I am referring to www.cprogramming.com

I don't care what you assure. I'm just telling it the way it is. Your website is crap until you make that adjustment.

    Dean,
what I do not understand is your emphasis of the message boards over the rest of the site: I thought you were retired from these boards.

Once again, it isn't relevant whether you care that I assure you of a fact - I am merely informing you that your opinion in this matter is not going to sway my decision. I am well aware of the disorganisation of the front page, but I am always a great deal more aware than you are of what parts of the site are used by visitors. Regarding value judgements, I can only assume the value of the site rests in what is valuable to the largest percentage of visitors.

When I perform a search on goolge it might provide me with the link www.cprogramming.com, than I might look around and one day about a week later discover the message board.

If you want to depend on statistics than why post this thread? Also if you are aware of the disorganization of the front page than fix the damn thing before you ask people what they think about it.

In regard to my retirement, I am retired. I spend most of my time at www.flashdaddee.com which recently has made front page of PC Magazine.

Fixing the organization before asking for suggestions makes it more difficult to incorporate suggestions; asking for suggestions before modifying the design allows a new design to fluidly incorporate new suggestsions. Waiting until after a redesign risks the problems that have already occurred recur when attempting to incorporate suggestions into a new design.

Statistics have nothing to do with new ideas; I am asking for new ideas.

Consider the ramifications of the message board being the front page:

    1. The front page likely wouldn't be ranked as high in search engines, so it probably wouldn't get as many users, which seems counterintuitive to the goals of a site.
    2. The site suddenly becomes a great deal more focused on a single goal - there are strengths and weaknesses, but judging from the statistics, narrowing the focus is a bad idea.
    3. More transient users would show up. For every one or two people finding the board and staying there would be many more who would take advantage of the fact that the forum is there to post spam. By keeping the board from being the single prominent feature of the site it improves the quality of new posters.

You have not updated the default page for years. In theory your comments sound reasonable except the part where you mention problems that have already occurred. Where those the problems that occured in 1998?

Making the message board the default page would clean up the internet.

That is the way it is now. This website is just a message board. But maybe if new high quality tutorials were added that would change. C was invented in the 1970's but that doesn't mean that C programmers today represent the 'C With Classes' standard in their programs. I would be happy to make some recommendations for new tutorial subjects.

If you are going to keep the index page, at least upgrade it so that I don't feel like I'm visiting a bunch of hippies.

If I'm not mistaken this thread is named "What would you like to see?" If there are tutorials that you wish to see please say so, I'd certainly be intrested to hear them.

I don't really have any complaints at all about the site. I think the Home page could use a little bit more organization but the content there is rather good. I think it is key to continue to allow members to contribute to the information there. After all, the members support the success of the site. An algorithm section for commonly used methods would be nice as well. That would help to cut down on the CAQ.

The content needs to be updated. The tutorials should be revised with new content. A C# tutorial should be added. I don't even see any reference to ISO/IEC standard committee.

One of the things that pulls down the website is DOS. This is confusing to beginners who should be using the Win32 Console, and it is an excuse for Colleges to not upgrade their content for the good of the computer industry. Why do we have to look stupid here at cprogramming?

And as far as the tutorials are concerned I'll examine them over the next few months and subimit any revision or suggestions for updating consideration. That is after confering with some of the more experienced programmers such as Salem for example or Zen or Stoned Coder, etc. I'll judge the content but not make comments on it until I read it thoroughly. So you are saying that this sort of participation is allowed?

The one thing that must be done, and there is no excuse, that index page needs to be upgraded / updated / and totally improved. Anything would be better. It would be better to even have an index page that had nothing to do with programming and contained absolutely no links. Even if you did that than there would be more traffic here and more experienced programmers finding this website some other way since they would not be turned off from first glance.

Flashdaddee isn't as great as you make it out to be... but it has gotten better. When I first went... there was a scrolling homepage with little structure. It didn't have the makings of any sort of a good website. Links were centered down the middle and it was quite a mess.

Then flashdaddee got a vBulletin board (after cprogramming did I might add). Ooooooh that makes the site worthy of accolades. Money was spent on a prefab technology. It isn't like flashdaddee built the vBulletin. KEN is the major contributor to how brilliant the pages look now (excellent job KEN... I am not trying to belittle your work). The site is still incomplete (no tuts, no source, etc), but has great potential. (The quiz pages could be tabled out better instead of centered BTW)

PC Magazine, huh? Their editors are idiots if such is really the case.

I do not even know why you are being humored by the webmaster. You already have shown your belligerence, your merely moderate ability with computers and programming, and your inability to listen.

Finally... FD doesn't have their forums as the the main page either.... you know why? Because it is a bad idea, and so is you having any input in these matters. Go away...

If you don't believe that www.flashdaddee.com will be in the next edition of PC Magazine than go to the GD board at flashdaddee and look at the thread posted by Gades. He has a picture of the article to be published. Also Adrianxw's name is listed on the screen shot along with others.

The thread is in the Off Topic area and titled 'Press Release: 124 K image"

This is true. i just got of the horn with my department chair, and he said that DOS is not dead because Cprogramming has a DOS programming message board. The future of American academics is placed squarely on the shoulders of Cprogramming....jeesus...

i'm sick of hearing you complain about the lack of C# information posted here. YOU wanted the freaking board, and you should be happy it's even here. As far as i can tell there are only a few people who are really interested in C#. .NET hasn't even been released yet, and it remains to be seen how it's going to take off...nvoight has done some reading on the language and seems informed, and ken seems to like it. if you haven't alienated yourself from those two guys, why don't you start a discussion with them. i don't think you even know enough about the language to ask an intelligent quesiton.
YOU have professed a sick devotion to C#, yet you can't post any code for others to see. YOU don't know enough to convince people that C# is worth their time. oh yeah, that's right...it's too hard for you to post a positive message.

why don't you continue to struggle through your hundreds of dollars of wasted texts and stop depending on someone else to give you source code.

Like I said... Idiots. The editor/writer obviously doesn't know about vBulletin and that it is "slickly" implemented all over the damn place now.

Although... that is good press for you guys, but I would hustle on getting the site complete so you are ready for all the hordes. Congrats...

I don't have it in for you.... you are just being a dick.
